Why did he change his mind?
Does anyone know why Brad Pitt took this movie on, only to then decide he wasn't going to do it a few weeks before shooting began?

shareI suspect it had to do with a difference of opinion with Aronofsky, but concrete information has been very hard to come by.
Here's a nugget that about five minutes of Googling turned up...

All Art is pretense.
thanks chuck that was an excellent article on the troubled pre-production of the movie.

Kind of Ironic that he went on to do "Tree of Life"...
sharejackman was superb anyway. watched this movie again last night, (2nd time i've watched it) and yes, it's hard to decipher, yes it's pretentious, but by god - what a film it is. and say what you want, but both jackman and weisz were *superb* in it. fantastic chemistry and emotional performances - both could have won an oscar for their work imo.
sharewatching this movie and try to picture Brad Pitt in every scene Hugh Jackman was in and I just couldn't do it. he couldn't have done this movie, it wouldn't have worked
shareI agree about casting of Pitt.I just can't see it, and I am not really a Jackman fan,but he brings something to this role, that I don't think Pitt has in him, maybe it is a vulnerability and a rage together.I think Pitt overacts and underacts a lot of his roles. I love Weisz in this as well, and she is also excellent in Agora.
I did not like Pitt in Tree Of Life either,or Sean Penn.I am a fan of Malick's,but have not been impressed with anything of his since The New World.
Anyone have any ideas on who else could have carried this role off beside's Jackman?
The role really suited Hugh Jackman very well. Consider how he has turned out singular portrayals in the following --
*rage and vulnerability (The Wolverine)
*angst and obsession ( The Prestige/Prisoners)
*despair and redemption (Les Miserables)
and how his acting performance in The Fountain reflected those traits.
Those are very good and valid points.I would like to see him in more serios dramas, where he can show and extend his range.
