spanish empire at its peak: 190 cultural world heritage sites, including all of spain's former colonial possessions..
british empire at its peak: 30 cultural world heritage sites, including all of britain's former colonial possessions..
it is thus more than patently obvious that spain's imperial cultural footprint dwarfs britain's in an epic way..
the former spanish empire is full of global 'firsts:' oldest university in the colonial world, oldest cathedral in the colonial world, oldest town in the colonial world, oldest fortress in the colonial world, oldest defensive city walls in the colonial world, and so on..
britain, not so much..
why is that? ummmmmmmmmmmm..
it wasn't the fall from her 16th-floor penthouse that killed her, it was the landing
the spanish were known as 'the greatest builders since the romans' for a reason.. it is hardly surprising then that they would have bequeathed such a priceless and indeed unrivaled tangible/architectural legacy to their former colonial possessions..
by contrast, the british left precious 'little' of tangible/architectural worth behind in their colonial possessions..

what's ironic is that your post had n-o-t-h-i-n-g to do with the topic of this thread: the british empire's embarrassingly small number of world class unesco cultural heritage sites vis a vis the spanish empire..
the former spanish empire's 190 leave the british empire's 30 in the dust..
and one wonders: why so few in the former british empire? ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.. care to tell us?

the uk/england still lags horribly behind the major european nations in terms of 'cultural' heritage:
italy: 43 unesco 'cultural' world heritage sites spain: 37 germany: 36 france: 33
uk: 21, england: 17 <---an embarrassingly small number of native sites for a major european nation and former global empire..
this of course helps explain why there are so painfully few world class cultural sites across the former british empire.. i.e., the british were overwhelmingly an empire of greed/piracy that lacked any real desire to bring architectural and/or cultural splendor to any of its colonial possessions..
spain, by contrast, was a builders' empire, spreading cultural, architectural, humanizing and christianizing splendor throughout its global possessions, including the first universities, cathedrals, fortifications, cities, bishops and saints in the colonial world..
a truly thought-provoking comparison, no?
perhaps useless-153 can chime in with his/her thoughts on the subject..

why is the uk such a barren cultural wasteland with regards to native/homegrown sites of world class interest?
heck.. if it weren't for all the stuff england stole and pillaged from other countries through sheer thuggery, the british isles combined wouldn't have any 'worthy' art of their own to fill a small museum..

Guessing you have not heard of all the cultural/ scientific/ artistic/ engineering/ medical/ computer gifts the UK has giving to the world - this includes the world wide web, development of computers and the English language you are using. Other than a few rocks and and paella what has spain contributed.
Seriously of all the places in the world to take on, a it would be fruitless Spain trying to take on Britannia.
Only those with no valid argument pick holes in people's spelling and grammar.
oh please.. everyone knows al gore invented the internet..
at any rate, we're talking about CULTURAL HERITAGE SITES RELEVANT TO HUMANITY AS DEFINED BY UNESCO of which the former british empire has an embarrassingly small number.. I know you're desperate but try to stay on topic, will ya?

it's simply staggering to see the stark comparison between the former spanish empire's ample, trail-blazing contributions to the colonial world versus the meager cultural contributions of the former british empire in terms of world-class heritage sites, institutions, monuments, etc..

I'm still amazed that no one finds it shocking that britain should have such a paltry native patrimony of world class heritage sites of the cultural variety as specified and sanctioned by unesco, especially compared to the major mainland european nations: spain, italy, germany, france, etc.
in fact, if it weren't for london's storehouse-style museums containing what I would imagine to be close to upwards of 80% of the world's stolen (read FOREIGN) art, the uk would be a vast cultural wasteland.. <gasp>
quite a shocking stat for a nation which prides itself on its much-vaunted so-called elizabethan 'golden age'..

the global cultural impact of the former spanish empire is obviously unmatched! the brits can only content themselves with living under spain's gigantic imperial shadow.. ๐

ironically, that seems to be the mantra the british prime minister keeps barking at the head of the uk's department for culture media & sport: more more!
meaning: do your job and find some other pile of rocks (any pile of rocks you can dig up anywhere in the british isles) so we can beg unesco and try to squeeze out a couple more world heritage status properties..
the sad thing's that there simply isn't anything left in the uk of any worth with which to attract foreign visitors.. a cultural wasteland.. ๐ง
