Felony Charge

In the real world the prosecutor would only ask for what he knows will stick, he'd never have overreached for a felony charge, especially against a first offending pediatric surgeon. He'd have gone for the misdemeanor.

Also, Meredith didn't threaten him, she first tried to appeal to his sense of humanity, then when that didn't work she tried to appeal to his sense of priorities.

Oftentimes the prosecution will start with a higher charge because they know the defense will try to plead it down to a lesser offense, so they start high.

Meredith didn't threaten DeLuca, but her words could have been interpreted that way if one wanted to read into it like that.

I also got the impression DeLuca pushed for the felony charge

I can see how DeLuca could have misconstrued Meredith's words. She should have just kept quiet.

What the hell is a Stiles?
