Still watch but only out of habit

I watched this show since the beginning. The first few seasons were awesome; fun, quirky, interesting...Then it started getting just too serious. Not sure when this happened but it got steadily more and more depressing. It lost what made it fun.

This season is off to another extremely depressing start. Alex punches some guy and now is lucky if he only loses his licence while trying to avoid prison. Meredith is torn between her loyalty between her sister and Alex. Maggie as always tries to make Meredith feel guilty for not being sisterly in the same way that Lexi did. Finding out you have a sister after you're 35 may make it somewhat difficult to bond. I sometimes feel Meredith is painted as a bitch when she's just being a real person.

There's also the flimsy storyline about Maggies short lived relationship with Deluca and coming to his bedside despite her torn feelings of affection towards Meredith's love interest (forget his name) thereby once again testing Meredith's loyalty.

My issue with Maggie is that she is just sort of flighty and even though she herself can't decide what she actually wants others to make sure she gets it.

Then there's Joe who is still married to someone who I think they said was violent? And she is hiding from him? But strangely or perhaps not so strangely as she escapes from her abusive husband she becomes attached to Alex who also is violent, unreasonable, and verbally abusive. He has a sweet side but his anger comes up way too often for anyone to want him as a husband. He cuts her off, won't let her talk and won't listen to reason.

I suppose I'll watch this show until it finally calls it quits, but I don't enjoy it at all anymore. I would not even mind if it was depressing if the storylines were interesting or made sense but in my opinion they don't.

What really doesn't make sense is obsessively posting on the message board of a show, YEARS after you stop watching.

reply

Thank you! I hate that people feel the need to announce they have stopped watching the show. WTF? Are we supposed to scream and cry and beg you to stay? Please.

reply

She does the same thing on the boards of several other shows she claims not to watch. How is a show not worth your time to watch, but to post about?? It's insane!

If I quit watching something, I never think about it again.

reply

Same here. If I lose interest, I watch something else or read.

reply

She never actually stopped watching lol. She says that, but she always knows everything that went on

reply

I think you're right! Either that or her life is so pitiful, this is all she has for entertainment. Or both, lol!

Who the hell is begging you to stay?! Most of us want you to go!

reply

I imagine no one in your life has begged you to stay anywhere. But thank you, once again, for reminding everyone you are crazy. Your little tantrums and insults were funny, at first, but now, it's just sort of sad. So call me a bitch or whatever else springs into your three brain cells mind.

I've noticed that on other boards too.

I think people announce that because they are hurt and angry that the show has let them down, and feel the need to hopefully upset those who are still watching (misery loves company), yet they are too lonely/obsessed with IMDb to leave, which I guess is a compliment to IMDb.

reply

Yeah it does seem dumb, but I guess it's an old habit dying hard. I'll see it through and whine about it until the end.

reply

So stop watching. It doesn't make sense for an adult to partake in something they don't enjoy. You watch out of habit? Habits are broken everyday. Sheesh!

What other shows do you enjoy? There are so many out there and Outlander & Reign (I'm from Scotland so even though it is way off I binge watched both although Reign has went a bit GoT)

reply

Cardinal stop fibbing, you still watch. You always have an answer for people's questions, so that means you know what happened. So even if you don't watch yourself. You must read recaps or something. If you really don't watch, you wouldn't be here!

reply

Cardinal42 is the biggest hypocrite on IMDb she tells others to give show a chance when their favorite characters leave but she won't give grey's. Anatomy a chance because of PD leaving.

She knows to much about current episodes of Grey's Anatomy and law and order special victims unit

Lara Croft Himiko! The First Sun Queen! This is Yamatai.

reply

You guys should just block Cardinal. I did a few weeks ago and its made my posting/reading experience here much more enjoyable lol.

I so understand what you are saying Melissaslist. Have watched the show since day 1 and used to love it. Especially that episodes could make you both laugh and cry. It was pretty unique. When Derek died I like another poster wanted to stop and almost did but because I had invested so many years on the show I wanted to continue and see how it all ended up. And now after the first two episode of this new season I feel like I am probably really going to do it this time because the shows are painful to watch and have lost the quality that made me love it originally. Most shows of this nature don't survive extremely long runs well. This is the 13th season. Have read that Shondra Rimes wants to beat ER's 15 seasons. It should have ended several seasons ago. Shows like Six Feet Under, Parenthood, knew how to stop when they were ahead. This show doesn't. And no offense to anyone who still loves the show and wants to keep watching but I am tired of the frustrated and uninspired feeling I am left with after watching and am going to hang up my hat as well. The new NBC show "This is Us" seems promising. Actually NBC has stepped up so much in recent years with Blacklist, the Chicago Fire/PD/ER shows. PS: I never watched the long running ER when it aired originally. The late time slot didn't work for me and I tend not to jump into shows I haven't watched since day 1. That being said, thanks to Netflix I was able to watch the entire thing over many months and I don't know if that is why I feel like they were able to sustain the show for 15 years in away that Grey's is failing me personally or whether watching Grey's the same way straight through all the seasons would cause me to appreciate it more.

Silverybell,

Thanks for being the one person who doesn't say "if it's so bad why are you still watching? you must be an idiot". : ).

Yeah, I guess it makes no logical sense, though I suspect those who are fastest to call out my hypocrisy are the ones who probably understand better than anyone why someone might do this but project this onto me.

I too felt that GA was unique in that it had a balance of great stories that were funny and quirky along with sad stories that were dramatic and heartfelt. Now it seems all the stories are just kinda sad. It's lost it's balance.

I like the original cast of Bailey, Alex and even Mer but I felt the chemistry with of Derek, Izzy, Christina, Meredith...is just long gone and irreplaceable. IMO Christina was the best. She could cut through *beep* like no one else. Will probably still watch til the end regardless of the waste of time. I like Medical based shows. There are some things I find redeeming but like you said; 6 Feet Under, Parenthood...all ended on a very high note. You didn't want it to end, but it was the right time.

Melissaslist I would never think you were an idiot for continuing to watch. Once you invest time and effort and watch the show for a long time the characters can become "like family" and you really want to know what ends up happening to them. There were a few shows that I really wanted to stop early on but continued for that reason. There are a few shows that after a few seasons I just couldn't take it anymore so I just quit (Criminal Minds is one of them--it just got to me). And Once Upon a Time after several seasons (quit two years ago) I just found all the revolving door of characters and frustrating story lines not something I wanted to continue investing in. My sister doesn't think I will really quit but I am more serious about doing so than I have ever been before. it is just such a downer right now and knowing that there will probably be at least 4 more seasons including this one, don't think I have it in me to continue. We will see......

I completely understand. Last season, I told myself that since Derek had died, I was only watching out of habit and bc i didn't want the last 11 years to be a waste. But then, s12 turned out to be a pretty decent season and I enjoyed the ride.

This season has already shaped up to be unpleasant and I can see where we're going and don't like it one bit. I can't stand many of the characters, have no hope or desire for the remaining relationships, and there's nothing new left to uncover imo.

I do however like Maggie; i dont think she's flighty, she fits in well with the cast and i love it. On the flip side, Meredith irks me. But I do agree that Maggie guilting her for being 'her sister' was out of line, since they've only known each other for a year or two.

But everything else. Jo and Riggs especially, is ticking me off.

A rose is just a rose.

reply

In the same boat as the OP. I've taken several breaks from the show over the years and caught back up with Netflix. Many of the characters are just no longer interesting to watch or annoying as hell(Bailey, Jo and Maggie need to go!)

reply

yeah, i understand you.
i dont like this season 13
