Does this bother anyone else

When it comes to Jo,

All major obvious annoyances aside this goes back farther, like way farther. To basically just the character of Jo herself.

She lived in her car when she was 16 (and for years which I think she said as well)-- which--she brings up like all the time. We get it, it sucks but please stop bringing it up now. Anyway, she obviously had absolutely no money. At all.

How do you go from living in your car in a shady area ( she also said she carried a gun with her because not only was she living in her car, she was living in her car where she heard people being dangerous around her ) Ok why choose to plant your car like in the hood of a city?? Did it break down?

And then how do you realistically go from that--- to med school-- to being a young intern. And also having bleached white teeth. It seems everyone on Grey's has the same teeth bleaching thing going on, they probably just do it for all their main actors but for Jo's storyline that also aesthetically makes no sense.

UNLESS that whole story about her so vaguely describing the man she was married to was rich and paid for her med school and for her not to look homeless?? I wonder if he will finally make an appearance on the show "finding her" and we get to see how JO even came to be?

About Meredith and Christina,
Farther back as well. Her mom was Ellis Grey. She was obviously obsessed with Surgery and always knew she'd be one.
Why wasn't she a super young intern as well--- like Izzie, George, Lexie, Jo, Edwards, etc......
Same with Christina. It has started to bother me since all the new characters being younger made me realize people with big ambition can be like a 26 year old intern. And obviously a low 30's upper 20's attending?? (Amelia and Maggie are both very unrealistic doctors to me)
I get why it would take Alex some more time. But Christina was a top student, from Beverly Hills and rich and Meredith, duh. But Jo who lived in her car was where Meredith was at so much younger? I get Shonda cast who she cast and wanted who she wanted whatever age they are and started them as interns because that was the point. But now I am trying to think of explanations as to why they would just be starting there at that age being who they were. And I can't.

Meredith spent time in Europe after college and only went to medical school when she came back and found out Ellis was sick. And Cristina (No H) is a double doctor. She has an MD and a PhD.

reply

How does that explain Christina getting into a surgical intern program so late in life? Surgery seemed to be her main passion and top priority not getting a PhD. And if she was that good of a student as they make her out to be she can get a PhD and still be a younger surgical intern. Still makes no sense to me.

reply

Cristina (No H) spent more time in school getting her degrees.

No H doesn't seem to be working haha :D

Not everyone can fast track through school though. I know at my university, you were maxed out with the amount of courses you could take per year. A full course load was 5 full credits, and only with special permission could you take up to a credit more. Some schools won't let you take more than a full course load. Maybe she went to a school like that and had no choice but to be there for 3/4 years. And she got a PhD before her MD because she's Cristina...it makes total sense to me. It allows her to be more competitive, more elite, more brilliant.

According to Jo, she got full ride for both college and med school, however those are Ivy League schools and rarely (unless needy, like financial) do you get full scholarships like that. Alex obviously checked up on her and the hospital would too on her educational background, so as a few OP have speculated if her real name is not Jo, did she steal someone's identity or create a new one before she went to school which would mean she
A. married this very abusive man right out of HS and soon after ran away and and went to school, changing her name at the same time.
B. Went to school stole someone's identity and became that person
C. Everything from the story she told Alex is made up (about living in her car, etc)and she conned her way around life
Either ways there are so many holes, things do not add up and I hope they don't turn this into a soap opera moment where we are expected to suspend disbelief.

reply

It's fictional television, of course you're supposed to suspend disbelief!

To the OP, there are kids out there who have been homeless and went to college, even Ivy League schools, on scholarship. Jo probably lived in the dorms in college and med school. She also probably changed her name before med school or before she graduated med school and got her license. It's not hard to change your name. A few bucks and a form and it's done.

It's extremely difficult to legally change your name. I have looked into it for years because I have wanted to change mine. It's actually very expensive and depending on what state you're in it can be a long, grueling annoying process.

reply

I guess depends on where you live. I looked into it as well and it's just a simple form, show current id and the fee. Perhaps you were looking into amending your birth certificate? That is much more complicated.

Camilla makes no sense in this role based on her looks. Very few people are blessed with a perfect smile who grew up on the streets, and interns don't make much, and I doubt she would've splurged on teeth whitening because when you grow up poor, your priorities are different (I say this as someone who lived in a shelter when she was younger). It is possible that her husband did pay for stuff. That said, she probably could've got a lot of financial help for college (she was a ward of the state, I think, so she could've got funding that way). She could've gotten academic scholarships, maybe Mrs. Schmidt put in a good word for her with a foundation that gives bursaries etc. She also could've worked her way through school. I worked my way through university and grad school starting from government housing and ghettos, so its foreseeable that she did too.

26 would be about standard for someone starting med school, because most start college at 18, its 4 years so they're there until they're 22, and med school is 4 years.

Ellis probably wouldn't have been able to fast track because of the rampant sexism holding her back.

If a surgical residency is 5 years, 31 would again be on the right track. What's less believable to me isn't the fact that they're attendings, but that they became department heads so early.

And Cristina was a late started BECAUSE she had ambition. She's referred to herself as a 'double doctor' before, because she went and got a PhD from another school in bio chem, I think, before med school. Meredith was a late started originally because she didn't go into med school right away, but then they bungled that timeline up with the definitely-not-planned-from-the-beginning Maggie introduction.

In regards to the Jo thing, you have to remember that this is the same show that made a stereotype of a drug addict looking like they had to have dreads and had to be covered in tattoos and piercings if they weren't in med school (lexi in the alternate universe vs amelia in real universe) . So their view on a lot of things is pretty warped, lol!

reply

lmao so true

i dont know why i put so much thought into grey's when it's all so over the top anyway, since Seaon 1.

My best guesses are she either found a birth and death certificate and applied for a new SS#. Maybe she had enough training to get through school with high honors. OR she stole a classmates identity and maybe that person died as a Jane Doe.

She's claimed she's put people in the hospital before, so maybe after the abuse, she accidentally killed someone and took her identity (while in college or med school) was as smart as the classmate and thus able to be that person. I would love for that to be the twist. Then she goes to jail and Alex somehow gets off.

reply

I like the way you think, Sarah!

It has to be something like this... Fake name, Faked identity. Faked records. Hmmm... I would love to see how this all pans out. Like she makes a mistake about one of the fats that she's repeated over and over again and very. It's almost like it's rehearsed over and over again and she HAS to say it so not only she nows and believes it, but so does everyone else... incase something happens... hmmm...
