I Know Catarina Said They're Not Writing Her Real-Life Pregnancy In...

But in this last episode, it was so obvious she is pregnant in real-life. You could see her baby belly when she was wearing scrubs, her loose clothes when she was at home were a dead giveaway (and not the type of clothes her character usually wears), and her face is fuller then normal. So if they aren't going to write her pregnancy into the show, they need to find a better way of hiding it I think.

I think thet should just write it in! Owen wants to be a dad so bad! Ive felt bad dor him ever since Christina had that abortion. Poor guy

reply

Well, it would be kind of hard to do now, AND it would mean a lot of unprepared emotions, given Amelia's history.
Introducing a new baby for Amelia after what she has been through would require WAY more preparation.

reply

Yep it is so obvious. You can especially tell she's pregnant by looking at her face. It's all so much fuller. If they had hid her bump better and I didn't know she was pregnant in real life I would have thought she had had surgery done on her face!

reply

And she was carrying a huge bag and pulling it in front of her in the beginning of the episode...

reply

Yeah but if they wrote it in, they'd have to do another time jump to catch up with where she is in her pregnancy and those time jumps are getting ridiculous. Plus I personally hate Owen and Amelia so I don't particularly want to see them have a baby right now. They've been married for like 12 minutes, together for 15.

LOL ^this!

I love Amelia, but I don't like her with Owen, nor do I like Owen much. However, a pregnancy for Amelia could mean awesome drama material - but they can't just catch up to where Caterina is now, and a challenge like a new pregnancy for Amelia would need more preparation if it should actually serve a point in the drama.

It never works very well when actresses are pregnant in real life yet their character isn't. Towards the end of last season. I could tell almost immediately that Ms Capshaw was pregnant. I did a google search and found out she was. Clearly, you can tell she's pregnant now and no matter what they do to try and hide it, using oversize coats and sweaters, bags, large pocketbooks and desks, it's pretty much lame because her face shows weight gain with no explanation as to why. They should just make her pregnant. What's the big deal? It didn't work for Kerry Washington and it won't work here either. Don't get me started on Gillian Anderson in the second season of the X-Files and returning to work 10 days after giving birth.

It doesn't usually bother me- I can typically block it out and separate real life from the character. The only time I couldn't and found it very distracting was last season with Arizona/Jessica Capshaw. She gains a TON of weight with her pregnancies (she loses it just as quickly, so this is definitely not a knock- she's beautiful) but in the show was going to bars with Webber and drinking and living the single life and all I kept thinking was 'thank God Dr. Webber is with her because I'm pretty sure she's about to start crowning.'

Hellaciously distracting.

This is just a guess, but maybe they don't want to add anymore kids to the show. We've only seen Tuck once and he's a teenager now and rarely see Mere's kids although it would be nice to see more toys around and maybe a mention of a sleepover or they are already in bed or the babysitter took them, and they decided to have Sophia with Callie so they don't have to show her either. Right now they are focused on the new baby Harriett and probably don't want to add another one to the mix. They could do a miscarriage story, but that's been done with Meredith and losing one right after birth with April and the same on PP. Of course unless they had AZ have an insemination story there was no other way for her to be pregnant. CS is so far along with her pregnancy they would have to do another big time jump. Amelia did a good job helping Mere with Bailey as well as Maggie. But I don't think either would be ready for one of their own. Amelia would have Owen, but emotionally I don't think she is ready for one of her own to raise. And if they do decide to write it in, it would be tragic for a miscarry or something (again) While its supposed to be somewhat realistic, I think they should stop with adding babies to GA since they won't be seen anyway.

Interesting that you mentioned Tuck, as his presence represents the one time that Grey's did write a real-life pregnancy in the store. Chandra was pregnant, so they made Bailey pregnant. Interesting that it was a one-of.

reply

They did with SD April, but that was planned before she actually did become pregnant.

reply

Oh my, I had no idea. I don't even think Bailey's pregnancy was noticeable...I feel like she was on the show a lost less during that stretch of episodes until she gave birth.

A rose is just a rose.

reply

Yes, but that was a long time ago, when they weren't all gushing over when to have the next baby. (And I am glad Meredith isn't having any more)

Unfortunately, the show focuses on characters who are now at an age and point in their careers where many seriously consider having children. But if all of those ideas lead to actual children, the viewers would lose track of whose kid is who, and it would seriously block a lot of drama potential.
Because let's face it, happy baby time with no problems is poison for a drama, and we can't end up with everyone having to have c-sections in the dark or on a kitchen table or god knows where, or with everyone having babies with fatal genetic defects - two is already pushing it a bit, but one more and no one would believe it anymore. (Also, viewers would start expecting it in every pregnancy and get bored)

A number of shows these days are using CGI to erase the preg-belly, in limited shots. (Though mostly still using the big coats, big packages and purses, and all). They did it recently for Kerry Russell in the Americans, Claire Danes on Homeland, and Kristen Bell on House of Lies.

One of the showrunners for The Americans said, "“If you do two or three CGI shots per episode, we hope the audience will think less about the coat, the laundry basket."

Cmon, Shonda, if you're not going to write it in, pony up the CGI budget.
