House's salary
This has probably been asked before but, what would House's salary would've been? What about Cuddy's?
shareThis has probably been asked before but, what would House's salary would've been? What about Cuddy's?
shareHouse would be making anywhere between $55K and $180K with the average being $89K; I would suspect that his salary is probably below average for his age, experience and title as Cuddy says, at least once, that she got him cheaply because of his history of being fired...presumably more than once.
The salary range for a Dean of Medicine and Hospital Administrator is $50K to $170K with $95 being average.
I'm curious where you got your figures. In the U.S., specialists average well over $200K a year -- with some variance among the specialties of course. (I know there's no "diagnostics" specialty, but in House-world there was. Plus, House was a nephrologist and a department head.)
House was also an infectious disease specialist .
On one hand he was known work wide and doctors and patients sought him out he could make his own terms on the other hand many around him didn't want to work with him.
I guess you could go by what department heads in New Jersey make.
I just Googled "salary for Hospital dept. heads" and salaries for Cuddy's titles. I'm sure there's lots of factors involved; location of hospital, type of facility, size, number of beds, departments, average patients per year etc.
And it is mentioned in the show more than once that while his reputation does mean something for the hospital, Cuddy did get him "cheaply"; so I suspect that he does earn less than one would think he should.
Wilson, on the other hand, probably earns a pretty good chunk of change. And how much alimony he's paying is anyone's guess; wife #1 (Sam) had remarried and divorced; #2 (Bonnie) got her realtor's license to be financially independent. I'm not sure how #3 would work in NJ...she cheated on him and I got the impression that she instigated the divorce (but that's just an impression)
But here's some info on NJ alimony: http://www.divorcesource.com/ds/newjersey/new-jersey-alimony-4842.shtml
You're looking at the salaries of department heads and administrators who are not physicians. You're way off. According to you, he would make what the average teacher make on the bottom end.
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average annual salary for a teacher is approximately $55,000 per year.
House is not a specialist. "Diagnostician" isn't a specialist. He would essentially be considered a GP.

And how exactly do you propose House negotiate that salary? What leverage does he have?

1) one of the leading experts in his field, world wide
2) he wasnt't a GP. Infectious Disease and Nephrology
3) comparison to other docs in his specialty
Indeed. House has no negotiation power when it comes to salary because most hospitals refuse to hire him due to his methods.

Yes, there already has been a thread regarding this question but sadly it has been deleted. It's good that I save some of my posts in a word document. Here are the results of my research from back in the day:
Has anyone tried to figure out the annual salary of a department head in a tri-state hospital, say, the chief of Radiology or Pathology?
When the show was on I was thinking all along that Cuddy must have been making $300-400k a year with all she did for the hospital and her being a doctor. Looks like I was spot on.
She would have made quite the sugar mama. I always liked her throughout the show. She's really pretty for someone her age. I liked all her sassy backhanded comments to House. I doubt she would have much of a life considering her schedule though. The episode 5-9 was a good way to describe her usual day.
House had a pretty nice condo so I would imagine he did alright. He did ask Cuddy for a raise so I think he didn't make a whole lot. Probably 150-200k because of How Cuddy said no hospital would touch him, also how much the hospital would have to spend on lawsuits and him being such a liability. I'm sure he could definitely make a lot more if he wanted to like how Kutner and Taub set up that website with his name on it making thousands to diagnose over the internet. House could also have been a great endorser/partner to pharmaceuticals or medical devices. His cases would have also made great books, TV or movies. With his name and reputation he could have made an incredible amount of money. Look at Ben Carson's net worth of 10 million. You can turn your medical career into big money endorsements, seats on the board of companies, books, tv, movies, etc.
I envied Foreman when he was with 13. I saw her as damaged and I would want to make her happy. She never really seemed happy until she was with Foreman. I also felt bad that she had Huntington's and would want to help her through it like Foreman did. I really think Foreman was a pretty good guy. I didn't necessarily like him because he was so glum and boring but I respected him.
Chase ended up being the highest rated surgeon at the hospital so I would imagine he could make $500k or more depending on how much he worked.
One thing you have to remember; for the younger MDs, Chase, Cameron, Foreman, Kutner, 13. etc, a large chunk of whatever they're earning is going toward paying off large to massive school loans. I'm sure they were all at the top of their classes, or they wouldn't be working for House, but whatever scholarships they were able to get would not have covered all their years of school (four years pre-med, four years med, and as much as four to five years to specialize).
Someone Taub's age, having been in a lucrative private practice, may be paid off by the time we first meet him.
Wilson? Yes, he's pulling down a good chunk of change, but there are all those ex-wives. We find out that #1 (Sam) had re-married at some point, so the alimony would have stopped for her. Bonnie (#2) got her real estate license to be independent of Wilson…but presumably he'd been paying her for some years. As for #3…she did commit adultery, and I'm not familiar with NJ divorce law, so I don't know what, if anything he's paying her. But he's obviously doing well enough to buy that very large condo.
House…who knows. Technically, with a double specialty and as a department head, he should be making the big money. But he does tend to cry poor mouth though out the series. We know that Cuddy got him cheaply, as she mentions more than once. And you're only worth what someone is willing to pay…and we know that he's been fired…probably more than once. And considered something of a financial liability (for all his brilliance). While his flat/condo is somewhat low key, he has numerous expensive "toys" (a grand piano, even a baby grand, doesn't come cheap).
Not sure if its relevant, but in addition to what everyone else has found, I recall an episode where house tries to bribe a surgeon and the surgeon refuses saying "I make 600 grand a year" or something to that effect.
shareYeah I remember that. He said "you're trying to bribe me with 5,000? I make $600 grand."
Straight up baller.
Too bad House blackmailed him with pictures of him riding around with some hottie.
You know a divorce could cost the guy millions.
No idea but it was funny that for a doctor who clearly would makes a lot of money that he was always mooching off others.
shareHouse didn´t strike me as a guy who cared a lot about money either. He would do bets and sometimes loan money just for the sake of it, but I can´t picture him negotiating a raise with Cuddy.
