The music in this great film
Is it just me.. Or was Peter Robinson's Sound track too close to resemble Thomas Newman's "American Beauty"???

I made the same connection as I was watching the movie, so I guess that makes two of us.

Great great soundtrack!
shareYes I agree, It is a great soundtrack!
shareMy god, I just started watching this and the sounds sound identical.
It's an interesting soundtrack which works perfectly...or I'm just too fond of Thomas Newman's classic score.
I made the same connection as well! It also reminded me of the musical score of the action flick "true romance" which did sounded happier though. But it had the same instruments and rithm. Don't shoot me if I'm wrong :)
shareI was surprised that Newman was not credited at all for the music since the score was practically a re-mix of that for "American Beauty". Then again, that Thomas Newman music is the new fashion. I remember seeing (or hearing) it used for an episode of "Arliss" on HBO, without irony, shortly after the movie came out. It must be on countless other things since then. Newman himself even ripped it off for "6 Feet Under".
The music from "True Romance" is Hans Zimmer ripping off Carl Orff. If I ever score a film, I'm using a xylophone/marimba for sure.

Cool, so I wasn't imagining stuff! Always good to know. ^^ Thanks!
That's funny. I just posted exactly the same thing on Robinson's page. Seems like a total ripoff to me.
shareJust because the same instrument is used in both soundtracks, doesn't make it a ripoff. Sure, the music may sound similar, but it's just because that instrument (marimba?) isn't used very commonly in film soundtracks.
shareYep. I was just commenting at the Film Score Monthly forum that the score was heavily reminiscent of Thomas Newman's work (American Beauty and more). But this is not the only score to be guilty. There have been a multitude of scores in recent years borrowing the Newman marimbas style. It's gotten pretty tiring. I actually thought the score was the only weak point of this wonderful film. I would have preferred a score that was more original.
shareI agree. I would even go a step further to say that, at this point, marimbas should be banned from ALL movie soundtracks. I'll never be able to watch American Beauty again due to how annoyingly all-pervasive marimbas have become in movie soundtracks nowadays. I gag when I hear them.
**Just say "NO" to religion. The world no longer needs "god" or gods of any sort.**
Yep. It's enough to make ya choke on yer popcorn and do a spit take.
