I assumed he didn't check for a pulse b/c we were supposed to think she was the killer, or at least that's what I suspected from the totally gratuitous leg-stretching/teeth brushing scene from the beginning (i.e. she's flexible so she faked her death/hanging at the end). Because it's not like this movie didn't have ENOUGH red herrings already...
