The actors are only 8 years apart in real life, and it shows, it's always bugged me

Agreed. I always laughed in the flashback scenes where they tried to make Locke look younger with that bad wig and it just didn´t work. lol

Did we ever get an explanation as to how Locke's father was on the island?

He said he was in a car crash then the next thing he knew when he woke up after getting put into an ambulance was waking up on the island. Obviously The Others brought him for Locke so he could get his revenge and then join them out of appreciation but it definitely didn’t work out that way.
