Quick question:

Rewatching Lost and currently on season 5. During the flash forwards in season 4 and 5 when our Losties are back in LA, there are often men chasing the six and trying to kill them (specifically Sayid and Hurley for whatever reason?) who presumably work for Widmore. We are also told they killed Nadia, although Ben may have been responsible for that (I think.) So my question is simply: why? Widmore seems to want the oceanic six back on the island (I don't really understand why?)

Also, why did Widmore want to kill everyone on the island? I thought it might just be Ben lying, but Keamy's actions seen to contradict this. Widmore wants to find the island and exploit it, and he wants Ben gone. I get that, but how does killing everyone (possibly with the gas like Charlotte and Daniel feared) help his cause?

I guess I'm just really confused with Widmore. I get what his ultimate goals are, but I'm confused why he 1. Wanted to kill the islands inhabitants 2. Wanted to get the oceanic six back to the island later on, and 3. Seemingly sent assassins after sayid and Hurley.

Thanks in advance!!

If gassing everyone on the Island would kill Ben Linus and his followers, and allow Widmore to take control again, doesn't that make sense? Poison gas is how Ben Linus and The Others got rid of Dharma.

...2. Wanted to get the oceanic six back to the island later on

The Flash Forward takes place after the Freighter has been destroyed and after the Island has been "moved" in space/time so it can't be found again. It would seem Widmore's main goal in following the Losties is to follow them back to the Island, when/if they get there.

...3. Seemingly sent assassins after sayid and Hurley.

I don't think there is a real attempt to assassinate Hurley, only to follow him. Hurley is in a mental institution and tends to be paranoid. So it isn't surprising that he thinks the people following him are trying to kill him.

Sayid, on the other hand, has been working as an assassin for Ben Linus, killing off Charles Widmore's associates. It makes sense to want to kill Sayid.

Yeah, I just thought we heard at multiple points that Widmore wanted to get Ben, on top of his other mission of killing everyone on the island. I don't get why that part was necessary though. Why would he want everyone dead? He wouldn't even have anybody to lead once he got to the island. I guess he would just get new followers that trust him more?

Aha, duh. So Widmore didn't care about getting the 'special' ones back to the island. He just wanted to follow them. So, I'm assuming Widmore either uses Eloise or the route that their Ajira flight took to later find the island himself? I haven't gotten to that part on my rewatch so I have no idea how he ends up finding it. If so, that makes perfect sense now.

Okay, makes sense, thanks. Now that I realize Widmore doesn't have any interest in the Six besides exploiting them to get back to the island, it now makes sense to me that he would want Sayid dead since he is a threat, thanks

I think it is something like that. Ben Linus was definitely his main target. Judging from Keamy's words, I think the poison gas was meant more as a threat to ensure Widmore got his way. Why else would he wait to use it. Why take Alex as a hostage and threaten Ben with her death? Why not just gas the whole Island and skip all the drama.

But I think you are right. If Widmore HAD to use the poison gas and kill everyone on the Island he was prepared to do that. He seemed to have no shortage of followers from the outside world.

I think so. Widmore's greed and lust for power may have served the MIB but I don't think Widmore actually realized he was being manipulated. Like Ben Linus, he thought HE was in control.

Yes, I think that was Widmore's plan. But at the end of Season 6...when Widmore gets back on the Island, bringing Desmond with him, he says he was following Jacob's orders. This is tricky. Was it REALLY Jacob who wanted Desmond brought to the Island or was it the MIB posing as Jacob? I don't know. Desmond returning served BOTH Jacob's and the MIB's purposes. But the MIB had Desmond thrown down a well at first...so maybe it was Jacob who brought Widmore.

On the other hand, I have seen what I think is a Lost rule- Anything the real Jacob actually does will be shown on screen. Anything which is the result of the MIB posing as Jacob will be shown indirectly. So maybe it was the MIB who sends Widmore to the Island with Desmond in the end. I'm just not sure. Let me know what you think when you get there.

Awesome, thanks for the help. And I'll let you know when I get to that part!

When did MiB actually pose as Jacob?

They never actually explained who those people were. My theory though is that it wasn't Widmore, but rather it was Ilana and Jacob's bodyguards. As those "assassins" were using tranquilizer guns and Ilana's mission was to get them all to come back to the island.

In Widmore's eyes he was the rightful leader of the island. When Ben banished him, to Widmore that was a mutiny. So to him they deserved to die, because they followed Ben. Clear house and start over with a new group that would be loyal to Widmore.

Why did he think baby Alex deserved to die though?
