Missed the first few minutes

We got in just at the end of where Nim was explaining how they live, so we saw the parts where she explained what they eat and how she's friends with the animals and how they get supplies from a passing boat every month.

But can someone tell me why they're isolated, how they got to the island, and what happened to the mother? Is there something involving a whale?

In the first few minutes of the movie Nim narrates a story about the death of her mom by a whale that was caused by a ship (Buccaneer ship)getting too close.
Her dad and she sail the seas looking for the perfect secluded island away from civilization. As she narrates we see "beautiful drawings" that illustrate her story.

a whale swallowed her mom together with her boat, according to jack. :)
