Nim calling him Jack
How come Nim calls her father Jack and at other times Dad. Is Jack Nim's step-daughter?
No, I think they have a kind of partnership in taking care of the island, so he treats her as more of an equal. But when Nim is scared, she needs her Dad, not her friend Jack.
shareGood observation. In the book, Nim always refers to her father as Jack. I wish we would've seen a greater connection between them in the movie, as in the book, but understand why there was no communication once Jack was stranded.
shareDesertsunspot, you gave a really good answer. That was basically it--Nim and her dad were like friends and partners most of the time, but when a kid needs her parent, she needs her parent, plain and simple.

It's a very rare thing for kids to call their parents by their first names.
I thought it did work in the movie though. They were definately friends and partners on the island, but when she was scared and worried she called for "daddy".

Scout and Jem call their Father Atticus.
And this is set in America, but it is a rather old book.
I advise it-it's a very good read.
