Nim calling him Jack

How come Nim calls her father Jack and at other times Dad. Is Jack Nim's step-daughter?

reply

No, I think they have a kind of partnership in taking care of the island, so he treats her as more of an equal. But when Nim is scared, she needs her Dad, not her friend Jack.

reply

Good observation. In the book, Nim always refers to her father as Jack. I wish we would've seen a greater connection between them in the movie, as in the book, but understand why there was no communication once Jack was stranded.

reply

Desertsunspot, you gave a really good answer. That was basically it--Nim and her dad were like friends and partners most of the time, but when a kid needs her parent, she needs her parent, plain and simple.

reply

its almost unheard of where im from, maybe its just american culture...

reply

Yeah, I certainly never called my dad by the first name, but for a Hollywood movie, whatever works :)

reply

This is straight from the book, which is written by an Australian. So maybe it's an Aussie thing. America is not to blame for everything ;)

reply

HEHE! I'm a Chinese American and I was shocked that Nim called her dad by his first name. I was definitely raised to never call my mom and dad by their first names!

reply

In the US it really only happens in the movies and on television. Bart Simpson is another example of calling his dad, Homer, by his first name.

It's a very rare thing for kids to call their parents by their first names.
I thought it did work in the movie though. They were definately friends and partners on the island, but when she was scared and worried she called for "daddy".

It's also in Harper Lee's novel; 'To Kill a Mockingbird'.
Scout and Jem call their Father Atticus.
And this is set in America, but it is a rather old book.
I advise it-it's a very good read.
One of the greatest ever written.

Death is but the next adventure

reply

It's common for "unconventional" modern families where the children call their parents by name. My cousin's daughters do that and at one point even my mother wanted me to call her by her first name... but if you didn't grow up doing that, it's just weird.

It's on, bitch.

reply

I thought that part of the reason she called her dad Jack was because of the radio/satellite telephone. It made sense to me that she would use his first name to get a hold of him on the radio, and then assumed that it had just become a habit to use his first name all the time.

reply

i grew up in the US and have never called my parents by their first names

reply

I thought that was the reason too. Speaking over the sat phone it would be more effective to call him Jack than Dad.

I do believe in you... I just know you are going to fail.

"Is Jack Nim's step-daughter? "

...uh, that would be the other way around, OP.
