Fish in the movie

In the house they live in on the island there is a big whale, or fish looking thing hanging down. It may be some type of windchime, it looks like they might have made it out of scrap parts. does anyone know where I can find a picture of it, or a pattern

It'a a blue whale.

Rent the DVD. It's discussed in the "deleted scenes" on the DVD. In a deleted scene, Nim imagines the blue whale trying to swallow Alex when she tries to rescue her.
The blue whale also figures in the beginning story about the loss of her mother.
