Am I the only one...?

I would like to apologize in advance, because I never go on IMDb with the sole intention of trashing a movie I didn't like. But I have to with this one. I wanted to enjoy it, and I genuinely found Jodie Foster's performance to be a very funny breath of fresh air. Her character was quirky and interesting. I usually don't care for Gerard Butler either way, but he was charismatic and well cast in this and certainly held his own opposite Jodie Foster.

But the script sucked. The whole thing was overdone and over-edited - there was rarely a scene or sequence of shots in one setting that lasted more than a few seconds, and it was jarring. The story was nonexistent, and the actors deserved a better script.

Abigail Breslin's performance was so unimpressive it makes me wonder how she was able to do such a good job with Little Miss Sunshine, essentially playing herself as she was. Here was this boring, one-dimensional character, and underwritten as she was, I thought Breslin did a terrible job. She couldn't carry the movie, and her line readings were so wooden!! When she spoke to the animals, who were supposed to be her only friends growing up, she was so unconvincing! Not to mention the fact that the script unwisely gave Breslin an excessive number of unnecessary lines - things that a person would normally think to themselves rather than say aloud (in fact one ridiculous line is particularly memorable: "Be gone with you!"). But again, she didn't do the best with what little she had to work with, as did Butler and especially Foster.

Again, I don't mean to bash; I gave my valid reasons for hating the movie. Does anyone agree with me?

Oh yes, I was totally underwhelmed. My daughter wanted to see it and I wanted to see Gerard Butler, but it was a huge disappointment. You're right, the story was weak. I was sure that when Jodie got to the island it would be to rescue the little girl, not the other way around. So her arrival was meaningless except as filler and to be a future stepmother.

I wanted to like it too...
Cute idea/setup, great setting, small but likable cast....but damn, what a disappointment. The script was awful, the performances were one dimensional and overdone, and trying to keep interested in three distinct story lines was futile.
But, this was a couple of weeks after i first saw "Bridge to Terabithia".
Big mistake.

Me too! Wanted to like it, thought I would like it, but had to turn it off. Horrible film, and not the fault of the cast. The script was horrible, as you said above. Also, I didn't get the idea of a kid living in one fantasy world and fantasising about *another* fantasy world. Why?

Maybe the story would work as a picture book for 3-4-year-olds, but not as a feature-length film.
