The most improbable thing about this movie...

...was the seven-armed starfish.

(Virtually all echinoderms have a five-old symmetry.)

And apart from the unlikelyhood of a father leaving his 11-year-old daughter alone on a desert island, why didn't Nim think to contact 'the authorities' by phone or email, rather than just a barmy author?

There's a whole species of seven-armed starfish - Luidia.

So, possibly you are very young and have little experience in this.

This film is based on a BOOK, so the plot is taken from the BOOK. If the author of the story had the father leave his daughter--who seemed pretty resourceful in the film script--then that is what he did. You may remember the conversation they had about how he had left her before for one day and now it was two, etc., and how worried he was.

Most parents give their children a little room to grow-up as they get older and can handle the responsibility. Otherwise, they would never leave home, right?

SO, the story line comes from a book, and it does not seem odd given that this pair of people have lived all by themselves on this island for a while and have each learned to become self-sufficient.

OK?

So the improbabilities I identified (possibility excluding the starfish, which may be real, or may not feature in the original story) are simply shifted to the BOOK.

Yes. Good thinking!

Art is not necessarily realistic, you realize? Maybe go to a museum or read a fictional book and then you will understand.
