he could have fire balled into the building, through the roof. and everyone could have rallied for mega show down.

That's not a plot hole, it's a strategic decision. The 3rd Hokage didn't want anyone to join in the fight, as they'd have just been in the way. Plus, the events that follow progressed the story moreso than the outcome in which you described.
