If you're going to remake it, remake it well

I like this movie in general terms. It was relentlessly gripping (especially where they flood that chamber and are waiting for the hatch to automatically open) and I like the fact that we didn't know who was going to die. Peterson claims this is not a remake, which seems ridiculous. Of course it is!

There's one scene in the original which Peterson should have carried over. Don't read on if you haven't seen the original.

When the ship first capsizes and they're all in the ballroom, there is a great debate about what to do. Gene Hackman says they should move up and try to reach the hull. The bursar says they should stay where they are as they're safer. Hackman makes a plea but only a few (10?) follow him. Then the ballroom is compromised (an explosion?) and everyone makes a made dash to follow Hackman. It's a devastating scene, as those survivors realise the horror of their decision to stay. I also recall Hackman's group trying desperately to save people as they scramble up the Christmas tree.

Broadly speaking, Peterson keeps this in but not to the same scale. Lucas and Russell make a fairly quiet decision to move up and it seems that there wasn't that crisis of decision making for the remaining survivors. I think this should have been included, as it lends a lot of emotional heft.

In the remake the captain of the Poseidon tells someone to seal the watertight doors before the sea starts to flood into the ballroom.

Plus there's no Christmas tree in the ballroom in the remake of Poseidon adventure.

And there's no priest either.
