She should have lived. She was very likable and actually more developed than most of the characters, so when they killed her off I was really pissed. She was a great character IMO.

I think they failed, because I only sympathized with her unlike in the original where one sympathized with most if not all of the characters. Plus what the hell was with the part where they killed off Valentino for shock value. It wasn't a matter of saving, they outright murdered him. I find it hard to believe that four people would be unable to pull up two men. That was a very distasteful and cold scene that turned just about everyone off from the film.
shareI thought Valentin's death scene was quite disturbing. Yet, the one that bothered me the most is the already mentioned, Elena's. Excluding Jen & the kid and his mother, all other characters were either undeveloped or unlikable. Josh Lucas for instance gets the most screen-time and is a lead characters, yet he's got no development what-so-ever.
Elena (along Jen) was the only character who actually had a backstory and was realistic (I'd get hysterical in those vents too), so I was really disappointed to see her go. Mia Maestro was amazing.

Larry wasn't the only white person to die... Kurt Russell's character died too.
I don't understand how it has to be "Oh not enough white people died, or not enough _____ people died", etc. Why can't it just be "Too many people died" or the mention that specific characters die. I just don't get that. Why does race have to brought into it?
Russel's character's death's resulted from heroic self-sacrifice which makes this movie all the more racist. You see, the message is: only white people are true heroes, the brave ones who deserve to survive unlike the fainthearted captain of color and hundreds of gullible simpletons who entrusted their lives to him and get slaughtered like cattle. Come on, PC is fun if you take it easy, it basically is a competition: who can look out of the window and discriminate more cases of discrimination:)

yeah, she was the only character I cared for. This movie has probably some of the worst character development of all time. There was one movie I saw that was worse, but I can't think of the name it was so horrible. This ranks right up there with it. They were in such a hurry to get all the special effects in they forgot the cast. It's a shame really, because I though the acting was pretty good.
I mean, come on, the chick and her fiance have like two meaningful lines that made you think, 'Oh, they care about eachother'. The rest of the time they were screaming their heads off and you were supposed to feel sorry for them. Please.

I was so annoyed to see Dreyfuss' character live. Not only did he intend to kill himself before the wave, but he killed that other fellow.
And that annoying little brat. Not only does he yap his bloody head off, but he goes wandering off (why do the kids in disaster/horror movies always do that?) and endangers everyone else in the group with that delay.
As a matter of fact, all of the characters in this move were two-dimensional. I didn't feel any sympathy to any of them. That said, it makes it easier to guess who dies next (isn't that half the fun in watching a disaster movie?).
And I am still pissed off they killed off Shelly Winters in the original.
Belle's death in the original is in my list of most moving deaths in movies EVER... I really felt sad when she died, yet she died a hero.
I didn't expect the remake would ever live up to the original for me, but the murder of Valentin is what made me totally turn against just about every character in the film (except maybe Kurt and the girl who seemed like the star until she drowned!).
Dreyfuss' character I REALLY hated for that (way to show a positive gay character, folks!) and found myself actively hoping for his death the rest of the film.
Valentin's death was - I have to say - very realistic and chilling, which is perhaps a brave move, but seeing as it made me hate most of the other characters, I don't think it was a great idea.
just watched the movie and I'm also pissed about Elena's death, I love Mia Maestro ever since she joined "Alias". Elena was one of the most developed charcters and she almost seemed to be the leading lady, it's a shame she had to die such a stupid death.

Elena and Valentine were the only people in the movie that I liked and cared about.
The others were so annoying and selfish, I really didn't care what happened to them.
Ya know...it's funny cause I'm watching this for the first time since I actually saw it in the theater when it was released in 2006 and I remember my ENTIRE group of friends talking about how we all felt like Elena's death pretty much destroyed the film for us. She had the most compelling story line and we all felt like we were pulling for her to make it through. She was a lot more interesting than Emmy Rossum's character or the mom and her kid. I wonder what the writers were thinking of with killing her off? Oh well. It's just a movie.

I just saw this for the first time in its whole 'disaster glory' after I never made it through…
This is truly the worst film Petersen has ever done.
Hell, it's maybe one of the worst prestige-big-budget-blockbuster-disaster movies ever made.
Why ?
It has strong effects, good cinematography, an O.K. cast and a few effective moments…
It's all about the screenplay, dialogue, storytelling and those highly uninteresting, flat and unlikeable characters...
If it's really true, that Petersen himself decided to cut 20 minutes of character scenes,
well, then he's an idiot.
That's exactly what the movie needed, but maybe those scenes were even worse ?
The deaths of Valentin and Elena were VERY bad decisions that totally destroyed any possible
identification, investment or involvement in the story.
They were probably the only stereotypes that had something going for them,
because they were the poor underdogs.
Should be taught in film schools on how not to tell a story on a huge budget...
