$160,000,000 budget? How much did it make in profit?

I just watched this film for the first time yesterday. I thought it was actually pretty decent (7/10), and I think the imdb overall rating is too harsh.

Anyway, on watching the making-of documentary on the DVD it became very clear that this was an extremeley expensive film to make, and I see that IMDb cites an estimated $160,000,000 budget.

How much did it make back in total cinema tickets, DVD sales, etc? What was the net profit, or loss?

$181.7 million

combined worldwide total gross of $181,674,817 with American DVD sales of $27,196,438. For a total of $208,871,255 this was against a budget of $160,000,000 bringing the total gross to $48,871,255.

Worldwide DVD/Blu-ray sales are not accounted for here, neither is Pay Per View, Rentals or TV airings. If anyone has this information I would like to know.

I love the movie, but there was hardly a profit. Unfortunately.

For one, it's not just the budget of $160 million. You have to add between $50 to $100 million spent on worldwide marketing/advertising. Plus, you have to keep in mind that film studios pocket only around 30% of the foreign box office. And 50%, domestic box office-wise. It's not like they get all the money. That's not how business works.

The DVD sales of the movie, stateside, made for $27,296,503, according to TheNumbers.com. Which is not exactly a huge success.

So, that's that.

It didn't make any profit at all.

It lost about $200 mill.

A HUGE flop.

$200 million? No. Not even 'Stealth' lost $200 million.

But yes, 'Poseidon' was a big flop. Mainly because of the fact that the marketing campaign was a DISASTER. Very, very few people knew the movie was coming out.

It seems expensive, having gone on 10+ cruises in the last 20 years, some of the set pieces are extremely accurate to the interior of ships on the Royal Caribbean, Princess, and Holland America line.
