I do prefer a more upbeat happier movie so the change in the remake is more my style. But I don't hate the original either. I think both endings fit the movies the people were trying to make.
For the original, it was a darker more "realistic" type of story so the ending fit and was poignant. I especially loved how, after all that Alec's character did for the guests/workers at the hotel, they instantly turn on him and begin spreading rumors. I love all of their reactions when they find out what happened to him. Very tragic.
For the remake, the movie was an all around RomCom and therefor needed to be more positive. To keep the ending would really be anti climactic. I love that she, as a character, realizes you can't be afraid and have to live. Her letter about 'not wanting to be trapped in a box' was great. I will admit, this movie always inspires me and makes me feel better when I am in a bad mood.
So anyway, I liked both styles but I do prefer the remake and it's more positive ending.
