What was the motivation? (SPOILERS)

After watching this movie for the first time (my mind was completely blown, by the way!), I'm just confused about one thing. What was Carson's motivation? They had everyone leave the plane before he planned to blow it up so it wasn't to hurt people, and I can't imagine going through all that trouble just to make a scene, so what was his motivation? Was it mentioned in the movie and I just missed it or did they completely gloss over it?
