The curse of the 'plane' movies

3 thrillers taking place on a plane during the past decade ('Flight plan' / 'Red eye' / 'Snakes on a plane'), 3 very average movies to say the least.

Each time the premise is not bad, the direction is competent, and the acting reasonably inspired, but each time the script puts the whole thing down. Each time for a different reason: too lazy for 'Red eye', too far-fetched for 'Flight plan', too hysterical for 'Snakes on a plane'.

When will we have a GREAT plane thriller at last?

Why is it so hard to write realistic and nevertheless involving plots in such an exciting place? It's been done with boats and trains, so why the f... can't Hollywood screenwriters come out with something decent when it comes to planes?

Have you seen "Executive Decision" (1996)?

Great action movie, 8/10 in my list.

I agree "Executive Decision" was quite a compelling movie -- saw it a few months ago and it kept me on the edge of my seat.

Air Force One with Harrison Ford was pretty good (if that counts).

My top 3 are Air Force One, Non-Stop, and Executive Decision. Not sure if the original poster has seen Non-Stop. I thought it was a lot of fun and a very exciting thriller. It does require suspension of disbelief, but it compensates with great suspense, good action sequences, and a terrific cast.

You left out "Airplane", a real nail-biter.

I saw part of a movie once where I think there were hijackers. But all I remember is a final scene where you see a profile shot of a line of (I guess) the hijackers hanging in a row, shown from the legs down. Does anyone remember this movie or what the title is? I think it was from the 90’s. Thanks! I’ve always wondered what it was.

No way. An "average" move is worth watching. These movies were not.

The premise of 'Flight Plan' wasn't bad? I beg to differ. The premise is the entire problem with the movie.

Planes are not exciting, they're boring. That's one of the main reasons why plane movies suck so much.
