Good point. I think many people focus too much on the sadness of the film; there is also a lot of joy. Even the mother is fairly good with the kids at the beginning; and for quite a while the kids did a good job of playing house. Even while unbeknownst to him, Akira's sister is dying from her fall, he experiences joy playing baseball and we are happy for him.
