SIGOURNEY WEAVER

I was surprised to see her appear in 2 scenes in l episode. (She needed glaucoma drops.) She was terrific with Doc and Morwenna but I wondered how the show snared a big star to come to England for 2 scenes. Was she making a film or in a play there or is she friendly with the director/producer and did it as a lark?

Anyone know the back story?

reply

I thought someone had linked to te story elsewhere, but can't spot it.

Here's the story: http://www.express.co.uk/showbiz/tv-radio/614170/Martin-Clunes-Sigourney-Weaver-Doc-Martin-cameo-The-Jonathan-Ross-Show

No tears please, it's a waste of good suffering.

reply

Yank here. She seems to be the stereotype ugly American.

reply

I loved the from Martin: "I don't understand anything you are saying. Your accent is very thick."

reply

the stereotype ugly American.

Agreed. I found the character unfunny, and the role practically a throwaway. The writers should have been able to come up with something a little more imaginative.

reply

...garbage! Her character's (American) flaws "grossly exaggerated!" YIKES!

I love Brit programming, sitcoms and mysteries -- but they always contain exaggerated versions of Americans! And, if the American character is played by a Brit -- the American accent is always exaggerated...the character speaks very LOUDLY -- and curses a lot! (The men as well as the women!)

I remember watching FOYLE'S WAR; the plot contained the appearance of high-ranking American military officers (Generals, Colonels, etc.) I found it laughable that those American military officers spoke like "country-bumpkins and hillbillies!" Never mind that most of them would have attended top-grade military schools such as West Point! As I said, laughable!

reply

Maybe its payback for the arrogant British villain stereotype Hollywood seems to love?

reply

...arrogant British villains are fun! But, the list of British heroes in American films is also very, very long (perhaps longer.) Here are just a few British heroes/actors I have enjoyed over the years: All the James Bonds, Michael Caine, Ben Kingsley, Colin Firth, Hugh Laurie, Richard Burton, Alan Rickman, Laurence Olivier. There are many, many more who just don't come to mind, right now.

reply

I almost wish they would have made her character an arrogant villain. At least that would have given the role some interest.

reply

I think the only reason she was on the show was for US marketing. They even have her on the DVD cover for that tiny role.

reply

...point about "U.S. Marketing." I'm American and have been watching DOC MARTIN for years. Didn't need the "incentive" of an American actor/actress on the show to make me watch it/love it.

reply

If you're already watching, the marketing isn't for you. Putting her on the DVD cover for an insignificant role is to get new people to pick it up.

reply

That may be what you think, but a few minutes' research might prove you incorrect.

Take a look at both of these articles and the story behind the story will become clear.

A few minutes of reality would tell you marketing often claims to be something other than what it is.

reply

She's coming back for another episode according to Martin.
