1)did ANYONE find this movie a COMEDY?for god's sake it was practically a TRAGEDY.
2)toby wasn't 18 yet,how did he do pornography ?

i think the whole movie is very "bright side", so it can't be a tragedy at all...
but anyway,
it still got some sweet scene like the hat and that monkey.

By definition, a Tragedy ends with the death of a main protagonist, and no one dies in Transamerica. Granted, Toby's life was messed up, but he was young and had an opportunity to live a very happy and successful life. And Bree's parents apparently mourned the loss of their son, but Bree was extremely excited and happy about completing the final operation that made her into a full-fledged woman. And really, she was a woman before the surgery; the surgery was just to complete her body which was, as she said, a work in progress.

So, a movie can't be called a tragedy unless the main character dies? What does one call a sad movie, then, in which the main character doesn't die?

Even in Oedipus Rex--which is widely considered to be the defining Greek tragedy--Oedipus doesn't die.

Anyway, the movie had a happy ending, so I can't understand why it could be seen as a tragedy. And, since there was plenty of funny material throughout the movie, along with a happy ending, I would call it a comedy. I don't think it's quite a dramedy.

In answet to question #2: You're assuming porn producers check the aunthenticity of fake ID's? Because they have so much integrity.
Also, he was 17 at the start of the film; we don't know how time passed after he and Bree went their seperate ways. Perhaps those final scenes take place a few months later.

Yes, there is a famous gay porn star, Brent Corrigan, who started in films at age 17 with a fake I.D. He's called the "Traci Lords of gay porn." I think Kevin Zeger's character was partly based on Brent Corrigan.

I think you may be right, radrobd, 'cause Brent Corrigan's childhood was also messed up. His mother didn't die but she deserted him and his stepfather raised him for a bit though I don't think there was sexual abuse in this case.
