I wondered about this too because you would think this would cost thousands of dollars and Bree seemed like someone who lived paycheck to paycheck.
Also, I'd be curious how Bree got to Los Angeles to begin with. Of course, my guess would be she, then a he, moved to L.A. for college and his/her parents were giving her money at the time, but stopped when she/he started living as Bree.
I'm always curious when someone is able to do this in real life. A guy I went to high school with moved to Austin, Texas 300 miles away, and I believe he only had a high school diploma. He was working in a bar and yet was able to afford rent and, apparently, health insurance also because about ten years later he was diagnosed with HIV, then later died of full blown AIDS. I think, like Bree, that's why he left this area because he didn't want anyone to know about his sexuality. Where he got the money to move to Austin in the first place is anyone's guess. His parents were divorced and it seems unlikely they would have given him the cash to move. Could of found a boyfriend there, though.
Something I was also curious about with Bree when she mentions she was put in an institution by her parents, I've known transsexuals who put themselves in psych wards or someone else did and they managed to get SSI/disability benefits. Some of them have been on it for most of their life never actually having had a regular job.
