Since this film was made in 2005, a lot has changed. I don't think it is nearly as hard today as it was back then - at least I hope not. The LGBT community is very active so there is a safe place to go during your transition. Many more things are generally acceptable now that weren't then with same sex marriage, etc. Bruce Jenner and Chastity Bono becoming trans and having documentaries for those who don't quite know how to accept these changes, there is more awareness.

I hope at least a few things have gotten better for the LGBT community. Certainly couldn't have gotten worse IMHO.

Agree. I also remember Boys Don't Cry and A Girl Like Me. It's just interesting to think about those movies while thinking about Transamerica. They weren't too far apart from Transamerica's release either. Sometimes I link certain movies to who was president/administration/Congress at the time. Just during that time is the years as well. Hardly any social media. Though it doesn't have much to do with it either it just seems like a coincidence. I believe the LGBT community has come a long way especially with the passing of laws and bills. As a society most seem to be accepting than years ago.

I think in every decade we say this, though, because I remember back in the '70s there was Renee Richards who got a lot of media coverage as a transsexual and tennis player, and then in the early '80s there was a great HBO documentary film directed by actress Lee Grant called "What Sex Am I?"
