I recently found the original Bway version on CD, and I saw the TV film/video taped it, and also saw a High School Perform it this november. It seemed to be a different show to my memory each time. Because of the yearly nature of the show, was it slowly changed over time or something? Or was some of the music just done for the film?
If you saw this at CARDINAL O'HARA HIGH SCHOOL, I happened to be in it (Mr. Smythe!).
You are correct in two ways. One, it did develope over time. Mr. Smythe's beginning scene was cut (in the graveyard) because it was too sad to start off the show (this can be seen on the broadway cd). Also, two songs were changed over time, Jolly Rich and Fat became Jolly Good Time and Dancing on Your Grave left out various things, including Mr. Smythe and added this "Never Had A Fortune" bit. However, in our version, our Director liked the original ending so much more that we had our musical director write it out and we performed that instead.
For the TV version, many singing lines were changed to spoken ones, though I'm not quite sure of the reasons. Enjoy!
PS, if you did see it at COHS, come back and see Elton John and Tim Rices' AIDA next year!
No, I saw this at Walled Lake Western High School. Amazing theatre parts. Yeah, I wish I could get my hands on the movie version CD. I have it taped on VHS, but unfortunately I can't get the film soundtrack.
