Danny Cheating = Walter Punished?
Help me understand this: If Danny was the one who cheated, why did the game not punish him? The game seemed to punish Walter for correcting what Danny did.

shareI saw it as Danny cheated by moving his piece forward. Then when Walter moved his piece back, he moved it back too far. That would make Walter the cheater then.
I actually didn't keep track of where the piece should have been (I didn't have a notebook on me :P) so I could be wrong.
But even if Walter moved Danny's piece back to far, Danny was still NOT punished for moving the piece in the first place.
shareThen both of them should have been punished. I was also wondering about this.

My view on this is that the game only takes notice when the button is pressed. Danny cheated, but the button wasn't pressed. Then when Walter forces the piece back too far he is cheating, and 'caught' by the machine when he presses the button.
sharei thought that he didn't cheat at all, and that the piece moved accidentally or maybe the game was trying to teach them a lesson or something!
but then why would danny apologize for cheating huh
shareDanny was punished by having his brother taken away
shareOr Walter pushed Danny's piece back a step too far and the game never realized Danny had tried to cheat.
shareI don't think Danny actually cheated. I think the game just magically moved his piece because it wanted to mess with Walter for him being such a jerk to his brother.

Doyle: But I ordered Onion Rings.
Kelloway: Doyle!
Good theory, but when Walter A and Walter B put Danny in the dumbwaiter, to retrieve the games from the Zorgons Danny apologizes for cheating.

I took that as him apologising for all the times he cheated prior to that moment, and not inreference to a specific incident. So much was made throughout the film about Danny always cheating at games that it seems reasonable.
shareThis was partly why this film did annoy me. Danny continously acted like a brat yet got away with it while we are led to think Walter is the one with the problem just because he's not as cute and young.

I didn't really understand that but I think it was who was "caught cheating". Since a turn wasn't taken while the little kid cheated because the older one moved the ship back maybe too many spaces (now the other cheat is negated) and then took a turn he was now a cheater.
I agree-- I was confused. A plot problem I believe. (They should have fixed that).
shareDanny did try to cheat by moving his piece forward but, when Walter moved it back, Danny's attempt to cheat got erased. Unfortunately, Walter moved it back too far and the game punished him after pressing the button.
sharehmm. I just wanted to see Lisa be punished.
shareWhether it was Danny who originally cheated or Walter when he mis-corrected Danny's move, neither really matters. The "punishment" or challenge that Walter had to live through was ultimately not about some wrong move in the game. It was for his resentful feelings inside after Danny was born (now he Walter wasn't the youngest special child) and later after the parents divorced (Walter blamed Danny). Walter needed to let go of that resentment to fully love his brother unconditionally. He also needed to step up in his role as big brother now that the parents were divorced. Dad was a good dad but super busy. Walter as big brother now had an even larger role as a father figure to Danny. If Danny did something wrong it was his- big brother Walter's fault- and Walter needed to step up and take responsibility for Danny's mistakes. Not saying its right but as a little brother I've seen my older brother do it and I know its true and I'll always love him for that, well, among other things too :)
shareHere's the thing, early in the movie when Danny and Walter tried showing the game to Lisa, Walter took his turn and Lisa shut the door on them. He tried going again but it got stuck. Danny then pressed the button and it worked cuz it was his turn, so he couldn't have cheated.
shareWalter was caught cheating, as in people saw him move the piece. Danny wasn't. I'm pretty sure that's why only he was punished. At least that's how I see it.
