Defiance, OH

The town is actually called Defiance, Ohio. I wonder if they changed the title or if this is a mistype. I go to college near Defiance and two of my friends are from there. The one's mom went to school with the lady who wrote the book.

Does anybody know any contact info for casting for this movie? I am an actress born and raised in Defiance oh and want to be in this movie. If anyone has any info, please respond.

I am from Ontario, Canada and I just read in my local paper that this is going to be filmed near where I live so unfortunately for you it looks like they are going to use a small town here to substitute for Defiance, OH. Although I am not positive that they are shooting the whole thing here.

Hey everybody I know where this movie is being filmed. The location is Canada, Toronto. They are hiring extras and I might try out.

reply

I read that they will be filming for a week in Paris, Ontario which is a very small town about 1 hour from Toronto. I live very close to Paris and I was wondering if you or anyone else knows or perhaps could find out any info on the casting of extras for the week they will be filming here. Thankyou for your time.

They start filming here in Paris July 19th. On my street no less! I can't wait to get in on the action! They will be filming here for a few days. I bet Julianne is staying at Langdon Hall up here! It is where all the celebs stay (In Blair) I can't wait to see this film but it seems like it will not be released until '06!

Hi from over here in England to all those of you who, like me, eagerly await the arrival of this film. What can I add? The book was marvellous and was very well recieved over here in the UK, where slogan contests are still a huge craze. I have spoken with Terry Ryan, and can confirm that you couldn't meet a nicer person. Despite her huge success with The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio, she remains modest and unassuming, and if anyone deserves success, it is her! I have feelings that this wonderful story will be a blockbuster, after all, everyone loves a winner - and they don't come much bigger than Evelyn Ryan! I am running a competition at my website where you can win a copy of Terry's book. Please feel free to enter. Good luck!

They just are putting up the old street lights and actually have a big old looking sign that says:

"Defiance, Ohio
A nice place to live"

There is so much action on the street today it is insane. They are preparing to start filming on Monday. This is so neat!

reply

Wow, you are so lucky!!!! Keep an eye out for Terry, she is planning on spending some time in the area, watching the filming. :O)

reply

I see Ohio license plates parked in the hotel lot. Coincidence?

reply

Nope, don't think so. I think some of her siblings were planning on being there some of the time too, tho I seem to recall that Terry lives in San Francisco, but some of the siblings remained in Ohio. Forgot to ask you, if you see any local papers with articles about the movie, could you possibly post the link for them, if at all possible ????? thanks oodles :O)

reply

Sure I will keep my eye out! They dropped a sheet in my mail box with all the filming times and what scenes were where. I guess as a courtesy to the neighbourhood since they are filming right in the middle of our street. There are so many people coming into town and some of the production crew arrived Thursday and has worked all day today transforming the library and taking down all the "modern" signs on our street! It really is a sight to see!

reply

Just wait till Evelyn Ryan's daughter Terry arrives! She's the real star (after Evelyn, of course!)

reply

They have cut down filming to one day in Paris now as "the director did not feel comfortable with some of the shots" this was written in our small town weekender edition paper. But nonetheless they mentioned Woody might be around as well. And yes I would agree that Terry is the real star :) How excited she must be to have her mother's story (and her family's) made into a movie. I hope they do Evelyn's story justice.

reply

Like many films based on books, I think it will be entertaining and good to watch, but not a patch on the book. How can it be, when the focal point of Evelyn's story is about words and their importance to the family's survival and well-being. Nevertheless, I can't wait to see 'Evelyn' and her little 'birds'... what a wonderful woman and what an inspiration to us all. A pity she isn't here today to see her story come to life. Wonder what she would have made of it all...?
Out of interest, is the consumer competition (contests) scene still alive and kicking over there in Canada? Britain has gone competitions-crazy over the last few years, with people winning prizes (untaxed) on an almost weekly basis. We still have quite a few slogan tie-breakers, but (very sadly for us) prize draws (what you guys call sweepstakes) and instant wins are beginning to take over. Australia has lots of 'comps' and 'compers' (people who enter competitions) and 25-word slogan contests.

reply

HI brittbevis, I am a contester in Canada, have been for quite a while. Like Britain, we don't pay taxes on our wins yet, tho there has been rumblings to that effect. I know that the American's can get hit very hard with taxes, especially those TV games shows, where you have to come up with the tax money fast if you win anything like cars, trips, etc. Pretty well all the contests in Canada anymore are random/instant wins anymore, very few skill ones left anymore. Think the States is headed that way also. Anybody on this board a contester in the US?????

reply

Actually funny that you mention it I was reading the side of the toilet paper and noticed that it had a contest and asked people to write in and tell them what brand of toilet paper they use and why. So yes I guess there are a few of these contests left but not near as much as in Evelyn's day. I think alot of market research is done differently then it was back then.

reply

A toilet paper comp, eh??? Like it! But are the promoters looking for a cr** slogan??? (couldn't resist asking!)

reply

You've got me at it now... thinking up toilet paper slogans. Here's a recent British winning one:

Quality products and savings attract. Pulp Fiction? No - Dixel fact

reply

Hee! that is funny! :o)

reply

Guess that's why slogan (jingle) comps are so much fun to enter. Of course there is a lot of plagiarism around these days, unlike when Evelyn created her little gems. But I still find it's the writing of tiebreakers that makes the hobby so irresistable!

A winner is someone who never quits - a quitter is someone who never wins!

I have a picture of the sign that I took with a digital camera if anyone is interested.

reply

sorry, I'm a little lost here, the sign is of ??????
thanks for your patience, :O)

reply

My relatives actually live in Defiance,OH. I go there a couple of times every year to visit. It's cool that there's a movie about it.

reply

that's pretty neat!!! I wonder if their house on 801 Washington Avenue is still there???? There is an older house locally that resembles the photo in the book a lot, makes me think of this wonderful story everytime I go by it. :O)
p.s. too bad they didn't actually film the movie there, I know that Terry was very disappointed that it wasn't.

reply

It's a cost cutting thing! I was hoping too, that the real Defiance would be used, but films are rarely made in the actual places they are supposed to be... Groundhog Day/Punxsutawney is just one example I can think of....
