Words to the Beechnut Jingle

Does anyone know the words to that Beechnut contest jingle Evelyn won, or do you know where I might find the words? It was the jingle that has "sandwich" in it over and over?

It was funny how the husband (Kelly) was in such a bad mood when she and the kids were composing the song and he kept sticking his head in the room and chiming in really depressing and angry lyrics. He was such a child...it was something an angry little kid would do, sulking about something. And she and the kids just kept cheerfully ignoring him.

Yes, that's the one I mean! Thanks!

Is there any more to it? I thought when they were singing it in the movie there were a few verses.

reply

nope, no more to it that I remember from the movie, that's the entry she won the contest with. Tho the book & movie gives you more of her ideas and also a couple of Dortha Schaefer's entries.

Thanks, Cathy! I guess the "assignment" was to create a title that fit the music given for this really huge, everything-in-it hero sandwich, not to write a whole jingle. So it makes sense that it would have been just those lines. They repeated it over a few times, so maybe that's what gives the impression it was more. That and the husband coming out repeatedly with his various unhappy versions. It's so interesting how Evelyn got so much inspiration from the hard times of her life. Cleaning out the refrigerator and cupboards to put together a meal for her family is something she got a ton of experience doing.

I'm going to see if my local library has the book. I'd love to read it.

Boy, Cathy, you sure are fast w/ your replies! You must be keeping a close eye on the board.

I figured out why I thought there were more words to the song. I watched the movie over late this afternoon and I saw that when she was thinking up possible names for the sandwich, she came up w/ various ideas and it was obvious she was going to send them all in under different names of kids. I had the feeling I was hearing different verses, but it was only different names. When it was sung over by the female trio, they sang it a couple of times so it sounded like there was a second verse if you don't listen to the words close enough and realize they're being repeated.

What a clever jingle...
Although at first it appears simple, it makes good use of alliteration, has good rythmn and sticks in your head - it's what every advertiser aims for.

I also liked Evelyn's final big prize-winning jingle:

The time of your life you can win
With Dr. Pepper, the flavor that’s in.
It’s distinctive and bright
It’s lively and light...

"There’s no time like now to begin!"

To think that those few words saved a family from ruin.
What a clever and resourceful woman Evelyn was!
