Why is this filming in Canada??
Why is a movie that is based on events that take place in Defiance, Ohio, USA filming in Canada? Doesn't that seem a bit strange to anyone?

shareMY OPINION: As with a lot of films, TV shows, etc. a lot of it comes down to $$$$ unfortunately. More & more productions are being made up here in Canada, which is good for us, but not for the US industry. Seems to me that I heard that Arnie, the Governor (I believe) of California was going to try and stop the exodus of entertainment money leaving the US, haven't heard anything about his plans for a while, tho. I know that the author, Terry was really hoping it was going to be made in her hometown.
shareI love when movies are filmed in Canada, becuase Canada is such a great country but gets very little respect especially from their neighbors. Where is Terry's hometown?
shareit is, of course, Defiance, Ohio. :o) Are you from Canada ????, as I am living in Alberta presently.

I'm half american half canadadian. I didn't know Defiance was a city, I thought it was just a name. Canada is a great place to visit or live, you can go when its 100 degress or when its 40 degrees and its still fun. I would love to visit Vancouver, Britissh Columbia, that looks like a great city.
shareHere is the scoop:
They wanted to film in Defiance but as there are no crews or specialized equipment or (probably) hotels of the calibre that stars want to stay in, the costs become prohibitive as they have to travel ALL the crew (about 100) people and put them up in whatever hotels are there and pay them expense money for meals etc.
Next, they tried to film elsewhere in the US where there are some crews available, but aparrently there are some places they considered where the crews were already working on shows and therefore there were not enough experienced crews available, so, back to the original problem.
Thirdly, they need some places which could play for Defiance, Ohio, in the '50's and '60's and Southern Calif. doesn't look like that. But some places in Ontario do, and the crews are available, and the hotels are good, and then there is the difference in exchange rates, and all THAT is why it is shooting in Canada.
Satisfied?
Satisifed? No!
Resigned to the fact that more and more movies that involve American stories and locations will be filmed outside the US? Yes!
Doing everything that I possibly can to support films made in the US? You better believe it!
Ultimately the decisions are made by the people who hold the purse strings, namely the producers. Their job is to ensure that a movie is produced for the best price possible, and will maximise profits. Despite Arnie's protestations, I would suspect that the producers call the shots in many cases.
There are also other reasons for shooting in Canada. There are tax credits, there is the favourable exchange rate even if the Canadian dollar is a little stronger now than it was a couple of years ago, and we also have very good crews and actors here.
There are many small communities here that pass for 'rural America' and, for the most part, we are very supportive of the movie industry, the jobs that U.S. productions provide and everything that goes to create "Hollywood North" here in Canada.
Coincidentally, I have just come off the set of this movie where I and six fellow ACTRA members were involved in a shoot. The director, Jane Anderson is a joy to work with and I hope she likes Canada and the people enough to want to shoot up here again.
One final note to the comment that was posted about why something so American should be made in Canada. A seminal moment in recent history was, of course, the tragic events of 9/11. A film was made for TV called "D.C. 9/11: Time of Crisis". What could have been more American in terms of the images sent around the world, but this movie, which deals with the few days following 9/11 and George W.Bush's first visit to Ground Zero was filmed in ..... you guessed it, Canada! So, next time you search for the movie on the internet and you see Timothy Bottoms (who played George W.Bush) standing next to a firefighter on a wrecked truck as he bellows to the crowd through a megaphone, you will know who wrote this letter.
It's not like The American Film industry is poor and suffuring.
I personally love that American movies are filmed so often in Toronto and other areas of Canada, because I am an actor in Toronto and those films make up 90% of my job opportunities.
Without these movies filmed in Canada, there would have been no launching ground for the careers of such starts as Elisha Cuthbert, and Mike Myers.
Thanks to those movies we have one of the best film industries (outside of Hollywood) in the world.
It make really makes you proud to be Canadian eh?
(haha jokes)
The dollar happens to be a way to meet budget and still get great technical support. Currency can change back and we may be filming in the USA one day.
The impotant thing is that the movie gets made so everyone is entertained and hopefully educated
C'mon...the U.S. film industry has been hogging all the business since the beginning of film. Give us a break...(I love how I can go to a hospital and not get a bill when I leave...)

Give me a break! Like no movies taking place in other countries were ever
filmed in Hollywood.
Common guys, its not like every American movie is filmed in Canada. It's not even like American movies don't exist where British and Canadian battles are portrayed as being American. (Not that the United States military lacks a distinguished history but for example Pashindale was Canadian, 235 was British, etc, etc.)
Canadians consume lots and lots of American movies. Let's say we probably amount to 10% of the revenues in the US, I'd be very very surprised if 10% of the movies were filmed in Canada.
This does not mean I don't love Hollywood, but give the argument a rest. Truth be told, there are great film crews in Vancouver and Toronto, and we have a our share of creativity too.
Cheers
Defiance, Ohio.
Yep, it's real alright, I was born and raised there.
Great book, can't wait to see how the movie turns out.
Another movie set in Defiance, Ohio was "House Arrest" with Jaime Lee Curtis and Kevin Pollack.
That one was filmed in Chagrin Falls, Ohio (east of Cleveland) for all of the above reasons as well.
Budget, access to larger city, feel of the town etc....
Love the way the names in the movie reflect hometown people as well!
I was also born in Defiance. We moved to Chicago when I was 10. I went to Spencer Elementary and lived in the apartment that is attached to Ned Speiser Insurance right next to the college. My grandparents still live in Sherwood. So, there's my life story! LOL!
shareI live in Australia and my daughter is currently living in a town near Defiance. I was really looking forward to seeing a movie made in Defiance!
shareI'm from a town Defiance. Where is your daughter living? And it's quite true, there's nothing as far as hotels, restaurants, etc. anywhere around. So I can understand not filming IN Defiance.

ahhh, you forgot the comfort inn. i used to work at the comfort inn. so don't leave them out. and yes if i was a movie star i definatly wouldn't want to stay in any of those. fort wayne has some excellent hotel accomodations indeed.
it would of been cool if they filmed in defiance and i was still working there.
i live in bryan which is 15 minutes away. so yeah, would have been cool.
I also live in Defiance and have all my life (except while I was in college). It's such a great small town - which is why I came back. Both my mom and my father-in-law graduated from high school with Lea Ann Ryan, the oldest of the Ryan children. (Yes I know, how "small town".) I've enjoyed listening to their recollections about that time period and the family. Our families are really looking forward to seeing the movie.
As far as the film being shot in Canada, well... it's all about money. It's unfortunate that they didn't film anything here in Defiance, but it is understandable. The downtown has changed significanly, among other things. The writers and directors did come to Defiance for a week and toured the city. They wanted to see Defiance, OH, and get a feel for it so they could find a similar area that would still meet their needs. And quite honestly, as long as the town is similar and the feeling of the city, businesses and the families of the town itself are accurate, I'm okay with the Canada choice.
Go see the movie!!!
You would be surprized of how many movies are made in Canada!
shareMany films are made in Toronto, and many are made in Wilmington, North Carolina for the past 25 years. It is cheaper there to make films, and the extras do not have to be in a union. That is how I got started when I was fairly young.
