As a European always curious as why US cultural beatnik self-appointed gurus(execuse me, Italian but never commie-chic a-la-rive-gauche..)This film is on the level of Bicycle Thief, Palle the Conqueror and the most heart breaking stories of sadness or redemption amongst parents and children, with the corollary of triumph at the end... The American redemption... never knock it, its true, its beautiful and its great...! It sends a wonderful message... I am, as you say, a dude, but couldn't help shedding tears... What a goddamn beautiful and full of hope story.. Bravo and way to go for small time America and big hopes in little towns with little people.... Virtue is virtue and has kept us going for milleniums with Mommies like her, the best of best! Virgil and Socrates also had mothers and woes they saved them from... this is legendary beauty and food to the soul!

Grazie, Marinomediterraneo. I think you picked up on a good point, that despite the burden and put downs of Evelyn that we are all focusing on, it is true that all ten children became functioning adults, doing better than the parents. Indeed that is an American expectation, its institutions support it, albeit inconsistently, and it often comes true.
