what is that machine?
Question- What is that big machine that the lady is in when the main character goes to Goshen to visit her contesting friends? It looks like some sort of massager or something. Thanks!

It is described that way in the book also.
And remember the book is a work of non-fiction.
That was called an iron lung. It looked just like that. When I was a small girl back in the 50's I knew a girl that had to be in one. That was when Polio was rampant and there was no vaccine yet. Polio left you unable to breathe on your own, so you were dependent on an iron lung. Gruesome huh. I hadnt thought about that in years until I saw this movie. This movie brought back a lot of old memories from the 50's.

I thought it was a tanning machine.. hehhe silly me
"shucks.."
Definitely an iron lung. When we were kids in the fifties, we told each other horror stories about iron lungs. It was definitely a dreaded fate. You had to be in that thing for your entire life. I guess they went away when the polio vaccine came along.
I think i read somewhere that there's only 60 left in the U.S or something.
