A remake of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn?

I watched this movie and ATGIB in the same week and I can't get over how many parallels there are between these two movies. Both center around one single family led by a strong woman and a weak man. Both stories are eventually told by a daughter who has writing ambitions. The husbands are the same, in that they are both self destructive, but different in one major way. One is loved by all, but not fully supported by his stern wife and the other is hated by all, but for some unknown reason, is fully supported by his saintly wife. In both movies, it is the wife who manages, by her strength and strong will, to keep the wolves from the door. Neither husband makes it to the end of their respective movies alive!
