Sorry I'm late posting this.
You may have noticed a connection between the 1974 series and this mini. Ed Friendly was exec. producer of both the original TV movie and this new one (and associate producer of the series) - because he owns the rights to the Little House stories.

A couple other comments:

You may have also noticed that the music score composer paid homage to the first series by incorporating part of the original theme music.

How did they get Robin Williams to play his Mrs. Doubtfire character again?

It's fitting that McDonalds was a sponsor because this is the 50th anniversary for both McDs and The Wonderful World of Disney.

You certainly do not mean he owns the rights to Laura's books. Double check your "facts"

I think what the original poser means that Ed Friendly owns the rights to adapt the stories from the book for television.
