...who decided, "gee, I don't think this subject has been covered enough on television. Let's do a really bad remake of it while the original is still running 4 times a day on cable."

Not really. It was his idea to remake the series since he wasn't to happy that Michael landon didn't followed the books.
One of the reasons ML blew up the town was that people like Ed Friendly couldn't use his set for a remake

But this remake of Little House was actually very good.
