goof

I am watching the 2nd instalment of the Little House movie and I have already seen one goof, in the movie Mr Edwards faints down in the well, in the book it is Mr. Scott who faints down in the well.

reply

Saw another goof, in the movie Jack traps Mrs. Scott on the woodpile when she comes to check on Caroline and the girls after Charles went to town, in the book it was Mr. Edwards who Jack trapped on the woodpile.

So much for this series following the book more closely, like it was promoted.

yeahm, the Scotts were barely in the book. Why on earth did they blow them up into such obnoxious characters?

reply

I know, also I just thought about this in the book the Scotts could only speak Sweedish and they had a little girl, remember that Laura let her play with her doll Charolette when they were there for a visit and the little girl got upset when Laura tried to take Charolette back when the Scotts were going home so Caroline told her to give her doll to the little girl, then later laura found the doll laying in the mud and took it back home with her.

reply

The storyline you are thinking was if Anna Nelson in the book "On the Banks of Plum Creek" and her mother & father spoke Norwegina (Eleck & Olena Nelson).

reply

Sorry, my mistake, after reading the books so many times they kind of blend into each other.

reply

When they promoted the mini-series as following the book more closely, they meant more closely than the original TV series. Really, the only things in the original series that were true to the book were the characters! The new series did follow the book *much* more closely--my only complaint is that they left out the character of Carrie.

Why would that be anything to complain about? She did little for the series other than babble and grin a lot. I realize she was part of the family but that's about it.

I am watching the 3rd installment of the show and I think I saw the first goof of this episode, the part where the chimney caught on fire, if I remember right in the book Mary was sitting in the rocking chair with Carrie in her lap when the stick that was on fire rolled under her skirts and Laura pulled the chair with Mary and Carrie in it away from the stick and threw it back in the fire, in the movie Laura ran into the house and grabbed the stick and threw it outside, there was nothing about a rocking chair.

reply

This is more of an observation than a goof, I thought it was funny how right after Charles started playing the fiddle the music on the show got louder and drown out his playing, the actor must have been pretty bad if they did'nt want us to hear him play.

reply

You know, haven't any of you realized that when a book becomes a movie, or series, its not true to the book.

reply

Not necessarily...two books I read many years ago come to mind as to being pretty accurate to the mini-series they were made into: (1) The Thorn Birds and (2) Rich Man, Poor Man.

However, I would say you're over 90% right. Other books I've read only came close and except for the characters names, I would sit and watch the movie and/or mini-series and go "what the hell was that?"!

reply

no i know what you mean. i read all the Harry Potter books, and the first three i read twice. When i seen the movies, the first two was pretty true to the book, but after watching the third one, i didn't think it was at all true to the book.

Well, here's a question. Where was Carrie? I only watched this last episode. I'm so mad I missed the others. I didn't even know this was on. But was Carrie in the eps at all? Because I didn't see her tonight.

Hi,

Carrie was not in any of the episodes. I missed the last episode April 23rd, Can someone tell me what happened in it. I hope they release it on dvd. I read somewhere that if the ratings were good that Disney would bring it back as a prime time series. Hope they do.

faldema - I replied to one of your other posts about LHOTP and I will say you have good taste! We both like LHOTP and The Thorn Birds!

I'll definitely give you credit about The Thorn Birds book...there was a lot that was left out, but to be honest with you, I'm glad they didn't include those younger twin brothers...they were a pain in the a$$ and I didn't enjoy even reading about them when I read the novel. Also, Father Ralph always loved Meggie but he didn't leave the church for her or did I miss something? It's been years since I've read the book (although I still have it) but the only time I remember him "leaving" the church (and not just to visit off and on) is when he and Meggie were together while she was separated from Luke and she and Ralph conceived Dane. That's when he was questioning whether he was a man of God or of flesh. Remember Ralph was so upset later on thinking Dane belonged to Luke?

Don't forget...made-for-tv movies/mini-series whether it's The Thorn Birds or Little House or whatever can't include every single thing from the novel(s) and some things are made-up to keep the viewers interest. But I'm sure you're already aware of that.

Hope I didn't offend you...I'm not that type of person and always try to look at the other person's opinion without being nasty about it.

in lauras real life, carrie would have been born when charles took laura and mary to find the indian beads.in the book, carrie is there from the start but in the movie she isn't there at all which i didn't like.

reply

Uh, yeah I think we realize this. :-D Some of us are just complaining about it. I personally prefer movies or series to stick as closely as possible to the book. That could be because I'm a writer and I don't like people tampering with my ideas. :)

I read the series about every 5 years or so. I think it's her visualizations that impress me the most. I live in this part of the country and can relate to her love of the land here.
I wish they would film here. They never can get the visuals right. Dances With Wolves truly showed how the prairie looks.

As you can see, they traveled through six states, at least, but the majority of the series takes place in DeSmet, SD. The region is extremely flat yet every series makes them appear to be living on Rocky Mountain foothills!
