I love this movie.

It's weird and confusing and sometimes feels like a parody clip from SNL or the MTV Movie Awards, just because of how many good actors were cast in small parts. But i find it funny, i like the music and i just enjoy it. I think it is bizarre on purpose, but Richard Kelly over-explained things...which made it harder to accept it's "weirdness," for lack of a better word. If he would have left some of the backstory ambiguous or unknown and shortened the movie by a half hour i really think it would have found a larger audience. Donnie Darko was weird in its own way, and left you bewildered in a GREAT way. I dont know if Southland Tales could've been on quite that level, but i think it wouldve achieved at least a better overall acceptance and wouldnt be the worst reviewed movie ever at Cannes or whatever it was. Anyway...didnt expect all that to come out

Yep. Like so much of the good stuff, it followed itself in its own directions, to hell with what's "acceptable" or "expected" or "s'posed to be". It had great ambition and the chutzpah to pull it off.

No movie is perfect, but I am infinitely more inclined to forgive flaws in something daring and original like this than I am in something that tries to straddle the middle of the road and give me nothing new.
