Now, how is "The Prestige" underrated? Wasn't this a great hit when it came out?

It also has great score.

Of all the films listed in this thread that I've seen (and perhaps all the films that I've seen, period) The Truman Show takes the cake. While I agree that Southland Tales is certainly underrated, I understand why that has happened, considering it appeals to a very specific type of person, I believe. Whereas The Truman Show, I would think, can be enjoyed by everyone, and it's crafted so perfectly with an exceptional score, exceptional acting, directing, theme, you name it. There's no discernable reason it wasn't considered one of, if not the best film of the year that it came out. Poor marketing campaign perhaps. Maybe people expecting a typical, slapstick Jim Carrey movie. Though that doesn't have any affect on the film itself, so I don't know.

"Specificity?"

With regards to "The Prestige": I actually have met quite a few people
that don't like it.

You have to recall that, in typical Hollywood fashion. at the time of it's
release there was ANOTHER magic-related film starring Edward Norton entitled
"The Illusionist". Inevitably the two were compared, and i've met many many
people that prefer the safer, more predictable "Illusionist" to "The Prestige".

The irony lies in how most of the defilers of "The Prestige" defend their
hatred of it based on how they found the "twist" (that Bale had a true
life twin) to be entirely too predictable.

These people obviously didn't get the point of the film at all, and imo
opinion, DESERVE truly predictable tripe such as "The Illusionist".

Nobody rocks the cock like Krysta Now. And I mean nobody.

I'm a 'The Prestige' hater, but for one good reason- the book is better, with a more pleasing narrative... also, the characteristics of the two illusionists are changed so radically that it caused some cognitive dissonance... just sayin'...

reply

last time I looked, this is not a book club.

It's a movie database, so whether you like the book or not, it means nothing in comparison to how the movie was made. The movie should be judged on it's own merits, book or no book.
So with you coming on here saying 'the book is better', I can really only come to the conclusion that you are a pretentious twat...just sayin'

reply

so you hate a movie because the books better.... lol? its sad when people cant just enjoy a good film without feeling the need to hate on it simply due to comparison

reply

I think people saying the Prestige are saying thats its under-rated from the point of view that, while it was generally liked, that was pretty much it. It didn't become as well thought of as some peoplle think it should have been.

I think the film is a borderline classic that should have gotten WAY more attention than it did. Its an almost perfect film. IMO of course.

Another great shout is Perfume. That vanished without to much of a fuss being made of it, again, alot less fuss than I think it shoud have gotten.

For my own say i'd like to throw Eyes Wide Shut into the mix. I love that film!

If anything, the Prestige is over-rated - one of Nolan's poorer efforts which are rare in themselves. If anything, Memento is better and seriously underrated.

reply

How is Memento seriously underrated? It's the 29th highest rated film on IMDB, and widely considered to be his crowning achievement.

reply

Not that it should matter, but in terms of mainstream acceptance it wasn't. And it wasn't sensationalised and over publicised as much as later features like the Prestige.
IMDB reviews are generally from people who are (for the most part) knowledgeable about and take an active interest in film - there are lots of well rated films that were not a commercial success.

reply

"Not that it should matter, but in terms of mainstream acceptance it wasn't"

thats UTTER *beep* it had huge mainstream acceptance, are you on crack?

reply

Yeah.. i remember even being young and hearing about it along with fight club and seven as the first mind *beep* films for my generation that became very popular and mainstream.
