I know the Commander could be slow sometimes but, Gwen is OBVIOUSLY the same girl that he went to school with.

Then with a short, flattering, yet sweet outfit (makeup...etc...) she is suddenly beautiful.

it's because she used to be a sidekick, i guess... at the beginning of the movie, talking to his son, Commander said he never talked to a sidekick before his senior year or something like that.
