So unnorigional...

....the problem with this film is not that it bad, but that it is the biggest cliche ever. The whole plot with the nice kid seduced by coolness but then realizing his mistake and the friend who loves him and blahh was sickly. We have seen that in every high school movie ever made but here they have powers!
Hollywood can never come up with anything new can it?

Agreed just rewatching it now and noticed how the scene in the restuarant reminded me of another movie. Then I started thinking of that HS movie 'Drive Me Crazy'.

NOTHING is original anymore--everything has been done a million times whether you know it or not. There may or may not be a different spin on it, but it has been done nonetheless.

How silly of us, to think we could borrow a book from THE LIBRARY!!

reply

sorry to burst your bubble, but look at ANY movie nowadays and tell me that it IS original. good luck.
EVERY romantic comedy is a couple that can find at least 3 reasons to not be together but fall in love and have a happy ending together
EVERY high school movie has to do with cliques and teenage romance, and the underdog winning
EVERY football movie has a team that nobody expects to win going to the state championships
EVERY horror movie has every person die except the one or two most useful to the plot to stop the killer

but that is the reason that we watch them! we know exactly what happens, but we watch it for entertainment. unless you want to make a movie that doesn't involve the same plot as any other movie EVER made, please dont waste the space to post that a movie is unoriginal, because you can post that on every movie board.

You were expecting Shakespeare? Shaw? Ibsen? Chayefsky?
The whole thing was intended as a spoof on all the old comic book heroes.

(Reminds me of the lady who finally saw a production of "Hamlet" — and wondered what all the hoopla was about. "It's nothing but a bunch of clichés!")

Sure it was but that doesn't really excuse the writers for using that boring old formula that's at work in every other movie these days. This movie was ok. It had a lot more potential but it turned out to just be fun.

That's what it was intended to be!

It wasn't really a movie. It was a comic book — excuse me! a "graphic novel" — with live actors.

And fun was all it was ever intended to be — no need to look for any "deeper, more serious meaning".

No one is looking for deeper meaning. Just because it is modeled after a comic book or graphic model does not mean that it is necessary they use that specific formula. It is not one that even originated with comic books anyways so it's not like it actually meant anything. It just wasn't exceptional writing. Only good.

People are entitled to seek more in movies. It doesn't mean they are looking for Shakespeare. The potential was there in this film but it wasn't executed. End of story. Saying it was 'just fun' should not excuse mediocrity.

Personally, I was in love with the movie because the premise makes an excellent online game.

The idea of actions judging heroics, taking classes to earn new powers, a reason to have all those heroes so close together, heroes starting weak and developing their powers. It has huge potential!

The movie itself, yeah it's true it basically is the teen movie formula with super powers, but the creativity of the world and designs drew me in enough to forgive the flaws. It won't be my favorite film of all time, but it is a movie I enjoy watching each time it's on!

Originality is overrated. This movie was executed extremely well, and that is what made it good. Shakespeare recycled many/most of his stories and plots from other sources, did you know that? In the past the same stories would be told by most story tellers, and it was the way that they told the story that made it genius or terrible, even though it was the same story.

Because of the novelty of fast technological expansion in the 20th Century, industrial societies developed a sort of irrational fetish for novelty, with the idea that anything "original" is necessarily valuable. In point of fact, of course, originality is usually a sign of inferior quality compared to what has stood the test of time from the past, and the idea that originality is some kind of be all and end all of creativity is already an anachronism. To me when people say, "Oh, it's not original," they sound really ignorant and unsophisticated.

I do think that original, intrigueing and surprising plots are brilliant but I didn't sit down to watch this expecting an outstanding work of art, I was just expecting something light to watch.

There was very little that wasn't predictable here. There wasn't a single plot point that couldn't have been guessed at but as long as you take it for what it is, light fun, it's still enjoyable in it's own right.

I disliked this movie, because it was so extremely predictable and preachy. Oh, the young kids today are sure to learn a valuable lesson about life watching this movie: "Don't do stuff just because the pretty girl tells you to do them" and "Don't categorize people in A and B groups". Yeah, that's really something your parents haven't already told you or that you don't know in advance from other situations.

This film has a few redeeming qualities, like the twist with the villain and the use of the useless sidekicks' powers, but it is only a few steps away from the horror that is High School Musical.

The movie is SUPPOSED to be a cliche! It's a satire on the entire genre! Actually two genres, superhero movies and teen movies. I think they did a fantastic job and it's still one of my favorites to curl up with.
