If you enjoy this film—

Do yourself a favor and read the novel as well.
It’s a really great example of when experiencing the source material complements the film, and vice versa.
I saw the film first, and loved it, then read the novel a few years later and loved that as well.
The novel is a truly wonderful, poignant and heartfelt warning against overindulgence in mind-altering drugs, written by a man who witnessed the madness firsthand, and lost friends in said madness.
The film is a great visual representation and dramatization of the themes provided by the novel, but there are certain passages in the novel that simply cannot translate to the screen, and it’s worth a read just for those insanely insightful portions of the prose.
Just my humble two cents.

I'm finally getting around to reading this(my "to-read" pile has grown into an entire shelf...) I absolutely love it, I'm going to be reading more PKD for sure! Thanks for the recommendation...

i'm glad you liked it. i'm a big fan. it's not the place i would have thought to start if you haven't read any of his stuff. in fact, i told someone i work with not to read it recently & suggested he start somewhere else, because i thought it might seem a little too dense & hard to penetrate.

do you have any other pdk lined up? nobody asked for it, but i have a list of favorites that i'm always happy to share if you're looking for recommendations.

I started with ASD because I love the movie, I bought Ubik at the same time, so I guess I'll read that one next...I would love to hear your list of faves!

ubik is right at the top of my list. it's probably my favorite pkd. to me, it's the book where he found the perfect balance between his paranoid delusions & creating a tight, interesting story.

my other favorites are:

the three stigmata of palmer eldritch
martian time-slip
valis
flow my tears, the policeman said

but those are just ones that registered with me the most. other people will have their own favorites, no doubt. i also really like dr bloodmoney & radio free albemuth, but those are the first two i read & i think i perhaps over-rate them a bit because they were my entry point. i think they're not as widely liked by fans.
