The animation is horrible
Looks like a horrible mixture of flash animation, photos converted to formats that don't support as many colors as the original, and 3d games being run on low-end graphics cards from 1995.

I'm not complaining that they could have done it better. I'm complaining that they intentionally made it look like the *beep* graphics I used to get running games on hardware that couldn't handle them. They could have gone with any number of styles on the same budget without intentionally choosing to make it look horrible. Also, I'd just like to add: *beep* James Cameron. Avatar was a piece of *beep*

shareIt's called rotoscoping. It's meant to give the movie a bit of a surreal look, in which it succeeds. Also, think about the way they would have done scramble suits if the movie wasn't rotoscoped. CGI woulda stuck out like a sore thumb. All in all, this was the best way to go. And it looks fantastic.

It's a very specific stylized look that has nothing to do with budget.
And sorry, 1995 games don't hold a candle to this. Are you kidding me? Mech Warrior 2 vs. A Scanner Darkly? The clipping errors alone. And then all the little details. No, you can tell this is hand animation.
I also enjoyed the animation effects. Richard Linklater first experimented with a similar style of "rotoscoping" in 2001's Waking Life. Waking Life is made up of several different vignettes, each one using different animators with unique styles. Over 25 animators were used in the making, giving each segment it's own look. Very different from A Scanner Darkly, a much more cerebral film without a traditional plot, it obviously led the writer/director to use the animation style again. I recommend it for those who enjoyed A Scanner Darkly's animation style, or for any fans of animation. Anyone seen it?
Do you remember the spell?
Asa Nisi Masa... Asa Nisi Masa... sh!
I will have to look out for Waking Life, I thought Scanner Darkly looked beautiful and it is what drew me to watch this film. I found it very unique and refreshing.

My response:
Perhaps that was the effect they were looking for. Personally, I thought the visual creative decisions worked well. Admittedly, it took about ten minutes to get used to, but once I adjusted to it, I was completely engrossed. I hope more animated films are made in this style.
If you love and support Michael Jackson 100%, copy & paste this into your signature. We love MJ!
I swear, video games and CG have made kids so goddamn bitchy about graphics theat they lose the sense of something that actually contains artistic vision
