A Scanner Darkly is good animation but that works against it. Too much emphasis is placed on animation style, not enough on plot. As a result, the movie does not come to a satisfactory conclusion. On a scale of one (forget it!) to ten (perfect!) I rate A Scanner Darky a six and recommend you see it only on cable. If you're an animation buff you may want to purchase it. Be warned, though, your expectations may not be met.

LOTS OF STYLE, AND A WHOLE LOT OF SUBSTANCE. IN FACT, MUCH MORE SUBSTANCE THAN STYLE.

LOTS OF PEOPLE BASH KEANU REEVES - THIS IS BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO UNDERSTANDING OF SCREEN ACTING. HE WOULD PROBABLY BE RUBBISH IN THE THEATRE (PROBABLY BUT WHO KNOWS) BUT HE IS GREAT FOR FILM. THIS IS NOT JUST MY OPINION, IT IS THE TRUTH, AS I AM WRITING IN CAPITALS.
I FOR ONE AM VERY GLAD KAUFMANN DID NOT WRITE THE SCRIPT. GREAT WRITERS ADAPTING GREAT WRITERS DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK GREAT. LINKLATER IS A GOOD FILM WRITER ANYHOW.
THIS IS A BRILLIANT FILM. DEFINITELY IN MY TOP FILMS EVER, AND MOST OF MY TOP FILMS WOULD CONSIST OF THE WORK OF KUBRICK, HERZOG, WILDER, LYNCH, TARKOVSKY TO NAME A FEW.
AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, TOUGH. BECAUSE IT'S ALL TRUE, IT'S ALL IN CAPITALS, AND THERE'S NOTHING TO BE DONE ABOUT IT.

this movie is so un-believably deep when you truly study it. Please give it about 6 more watches and look for everything you missed.
its sad to see someone talk down a masterpiece because they only focused on the effects and comical characters. And i know you didn't catch everything you really needed to because you call the ending Un-satisfactory...
its all about the dialogue and if you focus on what most people think is babble you notice its all relevant and plot developing
This movie is chalkful of substance, I don't even know how you could miss it unless you weren't even paying attention.

Agreed. It had ALOT of substance to it and no it's not a bad pun about drugs. This movie left me thinking. It even left me kind of angry of how they just used him.
