The Scene With Ronnie at the Public Pool

Interesting scene.

The idea that this convicted sex offender -- he exposed himself to a child while evidently not assaulting the child -- elects to present himself at a public pool, filled with children AND surrounded by watchful parents -- and go in swimming.

The interesting aspects: How he puts on big flippers and a mask -- it gives him a "monster" effect given that none of the other people are dressed like that.

How his rather scary face -- and totally pale body -- make him stand out among all the "regular" people -- including the gorgeous Brad and Sarah.

How Sarah (our protagonist) is the first one to recognize Ronnie as the local sex offender: "Its him..." Whereas other people start yelling "My god....its HIM! Get out of the water!)

The rather amusing "Jaws" spoof to the whole thing. This is a serious film so there is no "Da-dum, da-dum" Jaws music, but the shots are similar: the children's legs dangling underwater; everybody storming out of the pool in a massive crowd panic. The pool now emptied of people as the ocean was.

Two cops arrive to remove Ronnie from the pool and we get the biggest revelation of the scene: Ronnie has a touch of evil to him, this was not an innocent appearance. "I was only trying to COOL OFF!" he rages to the crowd. Sure. He also evidently wanted to be in a pool filled with children.

Whatever sympathy we COULD be giving Ronnie, as the movie progresses, we can't. Because he himself knows that he still cannot control his urges and that he is a danger to the community. His horrific "blind date" with an emotionally damaged adult woman ends in his character's nastiness...we are left with the realization that Ronnie needs help he isn't getting, and won't try to get for himself.

But first...there is this scene. This "Jaws" scene. Its clever, unsettling, funny and meaningful.
