Brad was a deadbeat

Didn't work, too lazy to study, failed the bar exam twice, lied about taking it the 3rd time in order to run off with Sarah for a couple of days. Wouldn't Kathy figure out he didn't even take it eventually? I know a girl that took the bar and I think it took way before she even got her results back, but I could be wrong.

Agreed. Brad was lame! I can see being very depressed, even going through a brief 'deadbeat' period.
But it sounded like he'd been doing that for years, plus he had a CHILD! That changes everything.
Despite Kathy being somewhat critical & a little frigid, she did NOT deserve to be treated like a moneymaking stud.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

Ever wonder as to why the movie was titled 'Little Children'?

reply

It is titled Little Children because of it's many themes. The molester preys on little children. The main characters have little children and the main characters act as if they are little children and not responsible adults. Get it?

I agree. Also, she was married with a really looser, why Brad didn't work on any other thing?

reply

For what it's worth, did Brad not fulfill the role of a stay at home dad? he took care of the child, cooked and I assume did the other household chores any stay at home PARENT would do...

Does that make my Mom a deadbeat?

reply

Well, considering Kathy's mom had to dip into her own money to help them out financially, I'd say yes, he was a deadbeat, not to mention cheating on his wife.

reply

I'd say he was rather reluctant to live up to society's expectations, because he clearly wasn't too fond of a legal career and its sombre prospects of being just another bread-winner with an unfulfulling nine-to-five job in a climate of professional narrow-mindedness. He hasn't decided what to do with his life yet, because he feels pressurised and misunderstood. He might be a little lethargic, but that's just his way of saying "I'm not willing to prostitute my talents! I'll be my own great man someday, and if I'll end up as a PE teacher!"

Well, at least that's how I see it.

I think my mask of sanity is about to slip.

reply

I don't think Brad was happy about it though. It seemed that Kathy was the one pushing him into being a lawyer but he wasn't up for it so instead of disappointing her he just kept putting it off or "accidentally" failing the exam. That's why I think he started having an affair with Sara, because Kathy was wearing the pants in the family (when he said himself) and being with Sara made him feel more like a man and not so weak and pathetic like he did when Kathy was around because she was making the money and he wasn't. With Sara, they both pretty much played house (newlywed edition) because there was no work there or any mention of it.

ha i love how the man is a deadbeat in the movie as he did not work when sarah didn't either yet nobody points that out, brad's wife seemed cold- he wasn't getting sex from her remember it was implied hence you can understand why he strayed-i'm not condoning it but it's 1 of the reason affairs happen.

reply

Agreed - a lot of folks have brought up different things, but here is how I see it:

He seemed to me to be a great stay-at-home dad, and as Kathy said, he is an amazing cook - it may not be too crazy to think that he does other household tasks spectacularly well, also. Things that if a woman was at home doing, she would be praised for being such a put-together woman. Why is it so different just since he's got a penis?

Kathy seemed like a really overbearing wife, who although she loves him, does not relate to him or understand in the least how to meet his needs and make him feel like a respected man - and I don't mean sexually, although that is obviously a problem as well. He was starving for respect, and when Sarah filled that need... as you said - it is how many affairs start.

reply

He should have not cheated. I don't think he was deadbeat. He was really good stay at home dad.

reply

I think you're very wrong about him. Hes much in teh same situation as Kate's character. He had passion for his old life as the college student athlete, but being a mere "lawyer" bores the heck out of him. You can't have the discipline to play football at that level and be lazy.

Kate's character is also having the same issues continuing her character.

So was Sarah deadbeat as well?
