What was so interesting about Sarah's nail polish?

I remember coming on here a few years ago to see if anyone asked this question and they did, with several people coming up with different reasons as to why Sarah's toenails were worth Kathy staring at and I think the best answer is because blue polish is suppose to represent being s free spirit or something. Anyway, I was wondering if any one else had a take on why Kathy was so focused on her nails?

Only just watched it and this bit of the movie where she pauses to look at her nail polish still bugs me....

i cant make a connection with anything within the movie that explains that pause...except ideas that we viewers create (which might be the point of it) e.g she likes the colour blue, or blue symbolizes free-spirit or ...

would love to hear more ideas

love the movie though

Not explained on the movie, but yes on the book.

Which brings to mind the question: should you, a grown up, smart woman wear this nail polish. Perhaps we can turn to Tom Perrota’s Little Children where one of the characters realizes that another woman is having an affair with her husband:

“The only surprising thing was the color of nail polish on her toe nails – somehow Kathy hadn’t noticed it before – a hideous metallic blue, the kind of color a trashy twelve year old would have loved, nothing you’d ever expect to find on the feet of a grown woman, the mother of a young child. You would have to be crazy to wear nail polish like that, or so deeply in love that you were beyond caring.”

Yes I thought the colour was childish, maybe he liked her to wear it for that reason.

I took it to mean that, based on the unremarkable way she was dressed, the nails had something to do with snazzing herself up (for Brad) at the pool.

Call them ISIL. Isis is an overloaded term that has many other legitimate uses.

I think she realized that she was doing it for Brad's sake to look pretty.
