It is rare for me to see such a bad movie. Everything is wrong here.
The main character is passive, he lacks character motivation and he doesn't have an arc. He never has to make a choice between anything and during the story he just doesn't do anything. He observes. Everyone observes, nobody acts. That right there is the biggest sin in storytelling.
Jonathan, or any other character, has nothing emotional invested in their search. There is no reason to care. Jonathan wasn't affected by what happened all those years ago, and we never see his relationship with his grandfather, so we have no reason to care.
There are no real characters here, no one has real substance. Instead, we get quirks. The characters are defined by their quirks and only by their quirks. The relationships are non-existent and they don't progress. The whole film in one big flat-line. During the search we get pointless conversations and pointless encounters. Take any of those scenes out, and you would never know it was there.
So, because there is no emotion to be found here, the film uses the holocaust to manipulate a few tears out of the audience. Not to mention that the unfunny "quirky" "humor" doesn't really blend in with the holocaust. Humor is found in characters and in emotion, the film lacks those so it lacks real humor. Then it gets topped off with a pointless suicide. It all sure seems like there is something profound going on, even though it's all empty under the hood.
