Deserves a 1 star rating

It is rare for me to see such a bad movie. Everything is wrong here.

The main character is passive, he lacks character motivation and he doesn't have an arc. He never has to make a choice between anything and during the story he just doesn't do anything. He observes. Everyone observes, nobody acts. That right there is the biggest sin in storytelling.

Jonathan, or any other character, has nothing emotional invested in their search. There is no reason to care. Jonathan wasn't affected by what happened all those years ago, and we never see his relationship with his grandfather, so we have no reason to care.

There are no real characters here, no one has real substance. Instead, we get quirks. The characters are defined by their quirks and only by their quirks. The relationships are non-existent and they don't progress. The whole film in one big flat-line. During the search we get pointless conversations and pointless encounters. Take any of those scenes out, and you would never know it was there.

So, because there is no emotion to be found here, the film uses the holocaust to manipulate a few tears out of the audience. Not to mention that the unfunny "quirky" "humor" doesn't really blend in with the holocaust. Humor is found in characters and in emotion, the film lacks those so it lacks real humor. Then it gets topped off with a pointless suicide. It all sure seems like there is something profound going on, even though it's all empty under the hood.

Recommended only to people who read dictionaries for fun.

1 star is way too much. Let it be for that trippy poster that isn't as bad.

the rating system allows each user to rate as they please:

so rate it a 1,

and save us your opinion. honestly, everyone thinks they have some special insight into why a movie is good/bad

you don't.

reply

///and save us your opinion.///

Well, I should tell AGAIN and AGAIN that the movie is so bad up to being offensive, - for I'm entitled to do that.

My fault is the missing IMO.

So, in my opinion, the movie is indecently bad.

I think English is your second language, haha.

reply

Indeed it is. Feel free to fix my spelling.

Thank you in advance.

How many languages do you know, btw?

I think, if that poster is like me, they will have been amused by your broken English upon watching a film in which a lot of humour is centred around, well, broken English.

- We could be men with ven!

reply

Well, broken English is way better than a bad movie.

How many languages do you know? Just curious.

I always dislike when people pick at others for their use of English. But can I ask why it matters how many languages they know? I'm assuming you know quite a few, or at least more than one. Are you getting at being more intelligent or something?

Oh, and for the record, I found this movie to be really good.

reply

Heaven forbid, by no means I pretend to be more intelligent or something. I was being annoyed by my opponent who apparently is one of these people reproaching to others for their broken English, with no ability to appreciate their efforts, while being probably one-lingual by themselves (as a many native English-speaking folks are, and I've no problems with it - as long as they don't show arrogance).

reply

I can understand that. I'm sorry about how I responded...especially since it had nothing to do with me. But now I'm curious, what other languages do you speak?

reply

Well, I don't know why does it matter, but anyway: my native language is Russian, I speak fluent Hebrew, Latvian and English. It wasn't by choice, but out of necessity.

I can understand those English speaking people who enjoy the privilege to speak their language at any place on this Earth they find themselves, being spared from the necessity to strain their heads, thus remaining one-lingual; but a bit of respect for a 'foreigner' would benefit them so and so.

What do you call someone who speaks 3 languages?

.... tri lingual

What do you call someone who speaks 2 languages?

.... bi-lingual

What do you call someone who speaks only 1 language?

..... American...

haha

reply

a fellow argentinean, actor fernando lamas, once said to a mocking johnny carson: "When a person has an accent, it means he can speak one more language than you".

I give it a 9 and really wanted to give it a 10, but don't know that I am exactly sure of some of the details of the story. Maybe I'm not smart enough, I guess? The story is deep... and emotionally touching and the actors don't necessarily need to portray that. If you have compassion and emotion at all, well... "everything is illuminated" in the story itself.

reply

LOL... Everything is wrong here. I didn't think the film was terrible, but I did think it was poorly concluded.

reply

First, I hated the catchy soundtrack. Also I found Elijah Wood a very obnoxious actor, always the same staring-eyes buttoned-shirts person.
There's a terrible disjunction between the hysterical humor around the Ucranian family and the background storyline at the end.
I could not feel empathy to any of the characters.
Perhaps the fundamental underlying problem of this film is its obvious attempt to manipulate the feelings of the viewer.

reply

Seems some people feel every film has to follow the standard Hollywood cookie-cutter approach. Oy vey.

reply

I agree. This movie did what it needed to, very well. Not a formulaic movie, IMO.
